Picolo recommends · Hotel in Trondheim, Norway
Scandic Bakklandet
Cobbles under your feet, café chairs out in the first sunshine, and the Old Town Bridge just around the corner from the hotel door.
The first café on the corner has its chairs out before you have finished your coffee. Nedre Bakklandet, on the east bank of the Nidelva, is the old quarter of painted wooden houses that most postcards of Trondheim are taken from.
The hotel is fitted into the row rather than towering over it. Its rooms are simpler and more Nordic in style than the chain normally goes for, and a good number face the river or the quiet back gardens behind the houses.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Scandic Bakklandet
We chose it because it puts the prettiest part of Trondheim right outside. You live like a local here: coffee on the corner, a walk over Gamle Bybro into the centre, and a bicycle for everything else.
Bakklandet is hilly and the lanes are narrow. Drivers and travellers with large suitcases will find arriving and parking awkward, and if you want a pool or a big hotel bar, the larger hotels across the river are a better fit.

It is in Nedre Bakklandet, on the east bank of the Nidelva, among the old timber houses, with Gamle Bybro into the centre a few minutes away.
Is Scandic Bakklandet good for drivers?
Not really. The streets are narrow and steep, so arriving by car or with heavy bags is the hotel's weakest point.
Is Scandic Bakklandet a good choice for couples?
Yes. The neighbourhood is one of the prettiest in Norway, and the calm rooms suit a romantic weekend built around cafés and walks.
