Britannia Hotel
Under the columns and palms of the palm court, the whole city seems to be raising a glass to something, and you only have to walk downstairs.
A tray of glasses passes between the palms, and somebody at the next table is toasting a birthday. The palm court, known locally as Palmehaven, is the reason so many people in Trondheim feel they know Britannia before they have ever booked a room.
Upstairs the mood turns quieter. Rooms are done in rich fabrics and dark timber, and the bathrooms hold their own against the old grand hotels further south in Europe. Torvet, the main square, is only a short stroll from the door on Dronningens gate.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Britannia Hotel
We chose Britannia because it is the one hotel in Trondheim that makes an evening in feel like an occasion. Bar, restaurant and spa are all under the same roof, and the staff manage to be correct without turning formal.
You pay for the house as much as the room. If your plan is to be out sightseeing from breakfast to bedtime, much of that money goes unused, and a simpler central hotel will serve you just as well.
