Clarion Collection Hotel With
Rough timber walls, sloping ceilings and a lounge where something sweet appears in the afternoon and supper follows when you come in from the cold.
The building began life as a warehouse by the sea, and it has not tried to hide it. Bare timber walls, odd angles and floors that do not quite line up give the place its character, and no two rooms share a shape.
Several rooms sit under sloping ceilings with windows onto the strait. Downstairs, the lounge fills up in the afternoon with guests in walking trousers, holding mugs of tea while they wait for the evening meal.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Clarion Collection Hotel With
It is the most homely stay on the waterfront. Supper is included, which matters a great deal after a long, cold day outside, and you are a minute from the quay and the main streets.
The charm comes with quirks. Rooms vary a lot in size and shape, and there is little sleek design. If you want identical modern rooms, a gym and a rooftop bar, look at the glass hotels on the quay.
What you get
