  • Rorbuer
  • Svolvær

Red wooden cabins on stilts over the harbour, with the peaks of Lofoten rising straight out of the sea behind them.

A rorbu is a traditional fisherman's cabin, built on the shore so the boats could tie up outside. At Svinøya the cabins stand on a small island joined to Svolvær by a bridge, with the water right under the windows.

Svolvær is the main town in Lofoten and the usual starting point for the islands. From here the road runs west past fishing villages, beaches and mountains that seem to rise straight from the sea.

Picolo’s verdict

Why we chose Svinøya Rorbuer

We chose it because it gives you the classic Lofoten scene, a red cabin on the water, without giving up the convenience of a town. Shops, restaurants and the harbour are close by.

This is not a hotel in the usual sense. You stay in cabins rather than a single building, and standards vary between them, so read the description of each type carefully before you book.
