Picolo recommends · Hotel in Loen, Norway
Hotel Alexandra
A big family hotel at the head of the fjord, with steep mountains rising straight up behind the village of Loen.
Loen is a small village where the inner arm of Nordfjord ends and the mountains begin almost at the waterline. Hotel Alexandra is the name most people know here, a large hotel that has welcomed visitors to the fjord for generations.
From the village you can ride the Loen Skylift, a cable car up the mountainside, or drive into Lodalen, a valley that leads towards arms of the Jostedalsbreen glacier. Both make an easy day out from the hotel.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Hotel Alexandra
We like Alexandra as a comfortable base for one of the most dramatic corners of western Norway. You get the fjord, the mountains and the glacier valleys within a short drive, and a full-service hotel to come back to.
This is a large hotel, and in summer it is busy with tour groups and cruise passengers in the village. If you want a small, quiet place to stay, look at a smaller hotel or a cabin along the fjord.
