The Oberoi, Mauritius
Thatched villas behind a west-facing beach on Turtle Bay, where the evening is mostly about watching the sun slip into the sea.
By late afternoon the light on Turtle Bay turns gold. The beach faces west, so the sun goes down straight ahead of you, and behind the sand the thatched roofs of the villas sit low among the gardens.
Many villas come with a private pool behind high garden walls, which makes it easy to spend a whole day without seeing another guest. Just offshore the bay is a protected marine park, and the water is often clear enough to see the coral from the surface.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose The Oberoi, Mauritius
We picked The Oberoi for sunsets, but what keeps it on the list is the calm. Service is attentive without being fussy, the villas give real privacy, and the sheltered bay is a good place to snorkel straight from the beach.
Evenings are quiet. There is little in the way of entertainment, so if you want bars, music and other people, the north coast has livelier choices. It is also a long way from the east coast beaches if you want to explore them.
