Constance Prince Maurice
Dinner on a floating deck in a mangrove lagoon, with suites standing on stilts above the water a short walk away.
The tables at Barachois sit on wooden platforms out on the water, tucked among the mangrove roots. As the light goes, lanterns come on and the only sound is the lagoon moving under the deck.
The hotel has a headland to itself, with a beach on either side and a protected mangrove forest behind. Some suites stand on stilts over the lagoon, and with relatively few rooms the whole place keeps a hushed, unhurried pace.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Constance Prince Maurice
This is our romantic pick. The setting is unusual even by Mauritius standards, the food is a reason to stay in for dinner, and the small scale means the beaches rarely feel busy.
It is built for couples and quiet, so it is not the place for children who need entertaining or for anyone after nightlife. Dinner at Barachois is popular and the floating tables are limited, so reserve early in your stay.
