Best hotels in Jamaica: ten places to stay in Negril, Ocho Rios, Montego Bay and the mountains

Jamaica is more than beaches. You can stay on the cliffs of Negril, by the rainforest in Port Antonio or high up in the Blue Mountains, and the island has some of the best-known couples hotels in the Caribbean.

Negril suits you if you want sunsets, cliffs and a long beach. Ocho Rios and Montego Bay have the big resorts and the shortest drive from the airport. Port Antonio and the Blue Mountains suit you if you want peace, nature and small hotels with plenty of character.

How Picolo chooses

Our editors pick every hotel and experience themselves, and most of them we have tried. Nobody can pay to be included or ranked higher. When you book through our links, Picolo earns a small commission. It never changes the price you pay, and it never decides what we write.

Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean, and it is more varied than most people expect. The north coast from Montego Bay to Ocho Rios has long beaches and the big resorts. Negril in the far west has one of the island's longest beaches and low cliffs where you jump straight into the sea. Further east lies Port Antonio, green and rainy, with small hotels by bays and rivers. And inland, the Blue Mountains rise above Kingston, where the evenings are cool and coffee grows on the slopes.

We picked ten hotels and say who they suit. All have a score of at least 8.8 out of 10 and more than 50 guest reviews on Expedia. The links go there, and the hotel is always chosen before the link. Many hotels in Jamaica are all inclusive, and several only take adults or couples. We say so under each hotel, so you can see what suits you. The hotels are grouped by area, from the north coast to Negril and on east to the mountains.

How to choose the right hotel in Jamaica

  • All inclusive or not: many resorts in Jamaica include everything. It is easy and often sensible, but you see less of the island. The small hotels give you more freedom.

  • Adults only: several of the best resorts only take couples or adults. If you travel with children, look at hotels such as Half Moon.

  • Beach or cliff: Negril has both a long sandy beach and cliffs with no beach. On the cliffs you swim from ladders and platforms straight into the sea.

  • Airport: most people land in Montego Bay. Negril and Ocho Rios are around an hour and a half away. For Port Antonio and the Blue Mountains, Kingston is closer.

  • Getting around: traffic drives on the left and the roads are winding. Many hotels arrange airport transfers, and that is often the easiest option.

The areas

  • The north coast: The north coast is where most visitors stay. Montego Bay has the airport and several large resorts, Falmouth lies a little further east, and Ocho Rios is known for its waterfalls and the green hills behind the town. At the eastern end of this stretch is Oracabessa, a small town where Ian Fleming had his house. Here you find both luxury resorts and some of the best-known couples hotels in the Caribbean.

  • Negril: Negril lies at the western tip of Jamaica and is known for its sunsets. Seven Mile Beach runs north from the town, long and white, with calm water. South of the centre, in the West End, there is no beach, but low limestone cliffs where the hotels have ladders and platforms down into the clear water. The mood is more relaxed than on the north coast.

  • Port Antonio and the Blue Mountains: The eastern part of Jamaica is greener, quieter and less developed. Port Antonio lies on the coast, with bays, rivers and the famous Blue Lagoon. The Blue Mountains rise behind Kingston, with coffee plantations, mist and trails. Here you stay in small hotels with plenty of character, not big resorts.
