Hotel Vilòn
A quiet side street behind Palazzo Borghese, a door that looks like a private address, and a salon in velvet and dark colours beyond it.
Step off the side street and the noise of the centre drops away. Inside it feels like someone's house rather than a hotel: velvet sofas, art on every wall, colours deep enough to make Roman daylight look softer.
The rooms number only a dozen or so, and in summer the small courtyard turns into a dining room. The Spanish Steps lie on one side and the river on the other, both an easy stroll.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Hotel Vilòn
We chose Vilòn for couples who want Rome on a small scale. There is no lobby to cross and no tour group at the desk, just a calm house in the middle of the historic centre with dinner in the courtyard on warm nights.
Room sizes vary widely and the smallest are tight, so check the category before you book. There is no pool or gym, and the hushed, adult atmosphere makes it a poor match for families with children.
