Konsulat Hotel
A former shop and office building on the old harbour street, now dressed in moss greens and soft wool, with Harpa a few minutes downhill.
Hafnarstræti, the harbour street, was where Reykjavik traded long before it had tour buses. Konsulat Hotel has taken over one of its old commercial buildings and filled it with green and grey tones, heavy fabrics and lamps that make a dark afternoon feel planned.
Step out and you are between two halves of the centre: the old town and Austurvöllur on one side, the harbour, Harpa concert hall and the whale-watching boats on the other. Restaurants are on every corner, so dinner rarely needs a plan.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Konsulat Hotel
It has more character than the large chain hotels in town, yet belongs to Hilton, so points and status still count. For couples who want somewhere warm and personal to come back to after a cold day, that combination is hard to find.
This is a city hotel without a spa or pool. If you want to soak, plan a trip to one of the public pools or a lagoon. Travellers chasing a big lobby scene will find it quieter than the hotels by Harpa.
