Pest-Buda Hotel
A handful of rooms above a Hungarian bistro on Castle Hill, where the cobbled streets empty once the last funicular goes down.
By early evening, the tour groups have gone back down the hill and Fortuna utca turns almost village-quiet. This little hotel occupies an old house on that street, a few minutes from Matthias Church and the Fisherman’s Bastion.
Downstairs, the bistro cooks Hungarian dishes. Upstairs there are only a few rooms, finished with wood, soft pale textiles and old photographs on the walls, which gives the place the feel of a family house rather than a hotel.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Pest-Buda Hotel
Our value pick: one of the best addresses in Budapest at a rate far below the palace hotels. You get the castle district in the early morning and late evening, when it is at its loveliest and almost empty.
Castle Hill is a climb away from the rest of the city, so expect to walk down or catch the bus to the bridge. In the evening the choice of places to eat up on the hill is limited.
What you get
- Bistro serving Hungarian food
- Old house on Castle Hill
- Few rooms with a homely feel
- Morning walks to the Fisherman’s Bastion
