Mandarin Oriental
A small pool on the roof, the tiled rooftops of the old town all around, and on a clear day the Alps standing pale on the horizon.
On a clear summer morning you can swim on the roof and look south to the mountains. The building dates from the 1800s, and it stands on a side street that stays surprisingly peaceful for somewhere this central.
Walk one way and you reach the Hofbräuhaus and its long tables. Walk the other and you are among the designer windows of Maximilianstrasse. Inside, the mood is hushed, the rooms are restful and the staff are attentive without fuss.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Mandarin Oriental
This is our choice for couples. It combines a quiet room and thoughtful service with a location that lets you walk to almost everything, and the roof terrace is one of the best places in the city for a drink at dusk.
Do not book it for the pool alone. It is small and only opens in the warmer part of the year, so a winter stay is about the rooms and the service. Prices are among the highest in Munich.
