Picolo recommends · Hotel in Hamburg, Germany
Tortue
Patterned wallpaper, velvet seats and a bar that fills every evening, inside the restored Stadthöfe in the centre of Hamburg.
By eight the lounge is full and the room glows with colour: printed wallpaper, plush armchairs, low lamps. Tortue draws as much on Paris as on Asia, and the effect is theatrical in a way few hotels in this rather sober city attempt.
It sits in the Stadthöfe, an old city block in Neustadt that has been restored and filled with shops and places to eat. The Alster and the main shopping streets are both within a few minutes on foot.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Tortue
This is our design pick in Hamburg, a hotel with genuine character rather than a brand template. The bars and restaurants make evenings easy, so it suits couples and friends who like to stay in and still feel out.
With live music in the bars, the lounge and lobby are seldom calm, and on weekend nights you will hear it. If you want a hushed lounge and a reading chair, a classic hotel on the Alster will suit you better.

What makes Tortue Hamburg different?
Its bold interior, inspired by Paris and Asia, and bars that draw a crowd in the evening. It feels nothing like a standard business hotel.
Is Tortue Hamburg central?
Yes. It is in the Stadthöfe in Neustadt, a few minutes on foot from the Binnenalster and the shopping streets.
Is Tortue Hamburg quiet?
The rooms are your retreat, but the bars have music and the public spaces can be busy. Choose a calmer hotel if that bothers you.
