The Fontenay
A white building of soft curves on the Aussenalster, where the tall windows frame sailing boats and the bar sits high above the lake.
Morning light comes in off the water and fills the room. Below, rowers and small yachts cross the Aussenalster, and joggers follow the path along the shore. The building itself looks almost poured rather than built, all rounded white edges among older villas.
Rooms are large and bright, facing either the lake or the park. You could easily stay in all day, moving between the spa, the pool and the bar at the top, where the whole lake opens out beneath you.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose The Fontenay
We chose The Fontenay as Hamburg's romantic stay. It is built for slow days: big rooms, a spa and a view that changes with every hour. Couples and fans of contemporary luxury will feel at home.
You trade the centre for the lake. Reaching the old town means a long walk along the water or a taxi, so if you plan to sightsee from dawn to dusk, a hotel on the Binnenalster is more practical.

Does The Fontenay have a pool?
Yes. There is a pool and a spa, which is a big part of the reason to stay here rather than in the city centre.
How far is The Fontenay from the city centre?
It is on the western shore of the Aussenalster, so the old town is a long walk along the water or a quick taxi ride.
Is The Fontenay good for couples?
It is our romantic pick in Hamburg: spacious rooms, a spa and a bar overlooking the lake suit a quiet weekend for two.
