Picolo recommends · Hotel in Hamburg, Germany
Ameron Speicherstadt
A historic building on the edge of the Speicherstadt, where red brick warehouses rise straight out of the canals outside.
After dark the warehouses light up, and the canals go still enough to hold the reflection of every brick gable. You only have to step outside the door to be in it, on the old bridges of the Speicherstadt, the former free port warehouse district.
Inside, the hotel leans into that past with warm colours, dark wood and touches that recall the merchants who once stored coffee and spices here. HafenCity lies on one side and the old centre on the other, both easy on foot.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Ameron Speicherstadt
We like it for the location. You sleep between the two halves of Hamburg most visitors want to see, and the evening walk along the lit canals is among the best things to do in the city.
The streets around it empty out after office hours, and there are fewer restaurants on the doorstep than near the Alster. Plan to walk a little for dinner, or book a table in HafenCity or the old town ahead of time.
