Hotel de Rome
You swim in what was once a bank vault, then climb to a roof terrace where the cathedral, the opera and the TV tower share one view.
Under the lobby, the strongroom of the former Dresdner Bank headquarters now holds a pool and a spa. Upstairs, the building keeps the weight of an old institution, with high ceilings, dark timber and curtains heavy enough to shut out the square.
Outside is Bebelplatz, with the State Opera next door and Unter den Linden a few steps away. Museum Island and the Brandenburg Gate can both be reached on foot, so much of a first trip to Berlin needs no ticket at all.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Hotel de Rome
We picked it as the most practical luxury base for a first visit. The big sights of Mitte are all around you, the rooms are quiet, and a swim in the old vault is a fine way to end a day of museums.
It is one of the pricier stays in the city, and the square goes quiet once the opera crowd has left. If you want bars and street life outside the door, Kreuzberg or Friedrichshain will suit you better.
