Pavillon de la Reine
Pass under the arcades of Place des Vosges, cross a courtyard draped in green, and the noise of Paris is suddenly gone.
The arcades of Place des Vosges, laid out in the early 1600s, are the entrance hall. A short passage leads into a courtyard thick with climbing plants, and the city behind you drops to a murmur.
Inside, the old town house keeps its beams and fireplaces, and the lounges feel lived in rather than designed. The Marais, with its galleries, falafel queues and small museums, starts at the gate, and the Seine is a short walk south.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Pavillon de la Reine
We like it for a weekend for two in the oldest part of the Right Bank. Few hotels in Paris give you such a quiet way in, and the setting on the square is hard to match anywhere in the city.
Room sizes swing widely, and the smallest are genuinely snug. Ask for a room over the courtyard if sleep matters. Travellers who want a grand lobby and a buzzing bar will find the house too hushed.
What you get
- Green courtyard behind the gate
- Fires in the lounges in winter
- Historic town house on Place des Vosges
- Courtyard rooms on request
- Small, personal hotel

Sizes vary a lot. The smallest rooms are compact, so check the category before you book and ask for one facing the courtyard for the quietest night.
