The Breakers
Wetsuits drying on the rail, kites over the bay and talk of what everyone saw on the reef: a lodge built around time in the water.
Here the day starts with the dive briefing rather than the breakfast buffet. The Breakers sits by the sea in Soma Bay with its own dive centre and kite school, and most guests spend their time underwater or on a board.
Rooms are simple and modern, and the mood is easy-going and sporty. Beginners can take courses in both diving and kiting, and plenty of guests return year after year, which tells you something about how the place is run.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose The Breakers
This is our value pick on the Red Sea, and the obvious one if you travel to dive, snorkel or kite. Couples and groups of friends who want an active holiday get good food and a friendly crowd.
It is not a luxury hotel, and there is no kids' club. If you want marble bathrooms, butler service or a full programme for children, the bigger resorts in Soma Bay and Sahl Hasheesh suit you better.
