Hotel Altstadt Vienna

  • Art collection
  • Spittelberg
  • Fireside salon
  • Design
  • Near the museums

An old townhouse in Spittelberg where every room is hung with art from the owner's own collection and no two are alike.

Spittelberg is the oldest corner of Neubau, the 7th district, a small grid of cobbled lanes and Biedermeier houses behind the MuseumsQuartier. Hotel Altstadt occupies a former apartment building on Kirchengasse, on the edge of it.

The owner is a collector, and it shows: paintings and photographs cover the walls, each floor has its own character, and the salon with a fire is kept open for guests to sit in. It feels more like a home than a hotel.

Picolo’s verdict

Why we chose Hotel Altstadt Vienna

We picked the Altstadt for travellers who care about design and art more than marble. The museums are a short walk away, and staying here feels personal in a way large hotels cannot copy.

Because every room is different, quality of light and size vary a great deal, and some rooms are small. If you want a predictable standard room and a classic reception, this is not the place.

What you get

  • Every room decorated differently
  • Salon with a fireplace for guests
  • Rooms from compact to studio size
  • Art from the owner's collection
  • Personal, small-hotel service
