Ovolo Woolloomooloo
A century-old timber wharf, its beams and rafters left bare, turned into a bright and playful hotel above the water.
The wharf stretches far out into the bay, and inside it the old timber still sets the tone. Heavy beams run overhead, the ceilings are high, and the rooms are dressed in bold colours rather than hotel beige.
There is a pool inside the building, and along the wharf a row of restaurants fills up as the evening goes on. To reach the centre, you walk through the Royal Botanic Garden, which is a fine way to start a day.

Picolo’s verdict
Why we chose Ovolo Woolloomooloo
We like Ovolo for its personality. It feels looser and more personal than the big harbour hotels, and it suits couples and friends who would rather have character than marble.
You are a little outside the centre here, about twenty minutes on foot, and there are no Opera House views. Anyone after a classic luxury hotel will find it too informal.
What you get
- Pool inside the wharf building
- Rooms with exposed timber beams
- Restaurants along the wharf
- Walk to town through the Botanic Garden
