Crystalbrook Riley

  • Lagoon pool
  • Esplanade
  • Reef trips
  • Families
  • Close to airport

A pool shaped like a lagoon, with a rim of real sand, solves the one thing Cairns lacks: somewhere in the centre to swim.

Children wade in from the sandy edge as if it were a beach, and in a sense it is the closest thing to one in town. The waterfront in Cairns is mudflats and mangroves rather than sand, so the big lagoon pool at the Riley does the job a beach would elsewhere.

Outside, the Esplanade runs along the water with cafés, restaurants and a walking path. The boats to the Great Barrier Reef leave from the marina a short way down, and the airport is close enough for an easy first or last night.

Picolo’s verdict

Why we chose Crystalbrook Riley

This is our family choice in Cairns. Reef days are simple to organise, the pool keeps children happy between trips, and dinner along the Esplanade is only a stroll away.

It is a city hotel, not a beach resort. If you want sand and sea outside the door, the northern beaches or Port Douglas suit you better, and you will need a car or transfer to reach them.

What you get

  • Lagoon-style pool with a sandy edge
  • Reef boats leave from the nearby marina
  • Good fit for families with children
  • Restaurants along the Esplanade
  • Short drive from the airport

Reef boats depart from the Cairns marina, a short way from the hotel along the waterfront. Most day trips leave in the morning and return late afternoon.
