Multi-centre honeymoon ideas for two places in one trip
A multi-centre honeymoon splits the trip between two places: a city or a safari first, then a beach to finish. Done well, it gives you two very different holidays for the price of one long flight.

A multi-centre honeymoon simply means staying in two or more places on the same trip, usually with a short flight or drive between them. The classic version starts with something active, such as a city, a safari or a tour, and ends with a week of rest by the sea. Below we suggest six combinations that work well for couples, how to split the nights, and the hotels we recommend in each.
In short: a multi-centre honeymoon
The rule of two: keep it to two places on a two-week honeymoon, and three at most on three weeks.
Active first, beach last: start with the city or the safari while you have the energy, and end by the sea.
Short hops: the best pairs are no more than four or five hours apart by air.
Our favourite pair: Dubai and the Maldives, with direct flights on Emirates from London and Oslo to Dubai and on to Malé in around four hours.
Our hotel pick: Jumeirah Al Qasr in Dubai, rated 9.6 out of 10 from 1,000 reviews on Hotels.com.
Our first choice for a multi-centre honeymoon: three nights at Jumeirah Al Qasr in Dubai, then a week in the Maldives. Check availability and prices at Jumeirah Al Qasr

How to plan a multi-centre honeymoon
Choose the beach first, then find a stop that is easy to reach on the way. The stopover should give you something the beach cannot: a city, wildlife, culture or food. Look at the flight route rather than the map. Dubai sits on the way to the Maldives from Europe, and Johannesburg on the way to Mauritius from much of southern Africa.
Give each place at least three nights. Anything shorter and the travel day takes too much of the stay. On a two-week honeymoon, a good split is four nights in the first place and nine or ten by the sea.
Six multi-centre honeymoons we recommend
Dubai and the Maldives
The easiest pair from Europe. Emirates flies direct from London and Oslo to Dubai, and on to Malé, the capital of the Maldives, in around four hours. Spend three or four nights in Dubai for the desert, the souks and the beach, then fly on for a week in a villa over the lagoon.
We know Dubai well, and we have stayed at Jawakara Islands in the Lhaviyani Atoll in the north of the Maldives, a resort with its own pool villas and a speedboat transfer from Malé. Read our Maldives honeymoon guide and our guide to the best luxury hotels in Dubai.

Sri Lanka and the Maldives
Ten days touring Sri Lanka, then a few days of rest in the Maldives, which is around an hour and a half by plane from Colombo. Sri Lanka gives you tea country, temples and safaris, and the Maldives gives you the lagoon. The south coast of Sri Lanka is at its best from December to April, the same months as the Maldives.
In Sri Lanka our pick is Cape Weligama on the south coast, rated 9.8 out of 10. Read our Sri Lanka honeymoon guide.

Safari and beach in Africa
The best known multi-centre honeymoon of all: a few days of game drives, then a beach. From Kruger National Park in South Africa, fly via Johannesburg to Mauritius in around four hours. From the Masai Mara in Kenya or the Serengeti in Tanzania, two of East Africa's great wildlife reserves, Zanzibar is a short flight away. Read our guide to safari and beach on Zanzibar.
For the safari, our pick is Kruger Shalati, where the rooms are train carriages on a bridge above the Sabie River. Read our safari honeymoon guide and our Mauritius honeymoon guide.

Rome and the Amalfi Coast
A city and a coast in one country, with no flight between them. Spend three nights in Rome, take the high-speed train to Naples in just over an hour, and drive on to the cliffs of Positano or Ravello. The best months are May, June and September.
In Rome our pick is Hotel de Russie, a short walk from the Spanish Steps, and on the coast Caruso in Ravello, high above the sea. Read our Italy honeymoon guide.

Bangkok, Chiang Mai and a Thai island
Two nights in Bangkok, three among the temples of Chiang Mai in the north, then a week on the beach in Krabi or on Koh Samui. Domestic flights are short and frequent, and there are direct flights from London and Oslo to Bangkok. Read our Thailand honeymoon guide for the full route and hotels.
Tokyo, Kyoto and Okinawa
Japan's own multi-centre: Tokyo, a night at a ryokan (a traditional Japanese inn), the temples of Kyoto, then a beach on Okinawa, Japan's subtropical islands. Read our Japan honeymoon guide, and see our Asia honeymoon guide for more combinations in the region.
Travel days and transfers
Plan the travel days with care. In the Maldives, seaplanes fly only in daylight, while speedboats can run after dark, which suits evening arrivals from Dubai or Colombo. Check the transfer times before you book the flights, so you do not spend a night at the airport. Read our guide to seaplane or speedboat in the Maldives.
Book the whole trip with the same dates in mind, and keep a buffer day before the most expensive part, such as the Maldives or a safari lodge, in case a flight is delayed.

Our pick for a multi-centre honeymoon
Jumeirah Al Qasr: a palace by the sea in Dubai
Jumeirah Al Qasr is a palace-style resort in Madinat Jumeirah, a cluster of hotels and canals on Jumeirah Beach. It is a ten-minute walk from the restaurants of the Souk Madinat Jumeirah, a covered market by the water, and with its own private beach. It has a spa, beach massages and many pools, and the view across to the Burj Al Arab is one of the classic sights of Dubai. Three nights here give a honeymoon a glamorous start before the Maldives, and guests rate it 9.6 out of 10 from 1,000 reviews on Hotels.com.

Our verdict
What Picolo recommends: two places, active first and beach last, no more than four or five hours apart. Dubai and the Maldives is the easiest pair from Europe, and safari and beach the most memorable.
Why: the contrast makes both parts better, and a short hop keeps the travel days from eating into the honeymoon.
The trade-off: every move costs half a day. If you want to unpack once and stay put, choose a single destination instead.
Frequently asked questions
What is a multi-centre honeymoon?
A multi-centre honeymoon is a trip that combines two or more places, such as a city and a beach or a safari and an island. Most couples start with the active part and finish with a week by the sea. The best pairs are a short flight apart, so you spend your time together rather than in airports.
What are the best multi-centre honeymoon combinations?
The best multi-centre honeymoon combinations are Dubai and the Maldives, Sri Lanka and the Maldives, a safari in Kenya, Tanzania or South Africa with Zanzibar or Mauritius, and Rome with the Amalfi Coast. In Asia, Bangkok with a Thai island and Tokyo with Kyoto and Okinawa also work well.
How many places should you visit on a honeymoon?
Two places is the right number for most honeymoons of two weeks. Give each place at least three nights, and save the longest stay for the beach at the end. On three weeks you can add a third stop, but more than that turns the honeymoon into a tour.
Should you do the safari or the beach first?
Do the safari first and the beach last. Game drives start early in the morning and the days are long, so it is better to do them while you have the energy. A week on the beach afterwards gives you time to rest before the flight home, and it ends the honeymoon on a slow note.
