Passport name change after marriage and what it means for your honeymoon

Changing your surname after the wedding is easy to get wrong when there is a honeymoon to catch. The rule that matters is simple: the name on the ticket must match the name in the passport you travel with.

Many couples book the honeymoon months before the wedding, and then one of them takes a new surname. That is where problems start, because airlines and border staff check that the ticket and the passport agree. This guide explains the two safe ways to handle it from the UK, what a post-dated passport is, and what to check with visas and airlines before you fly.

In short: passport name change and your honeymoon

  • The golden rule: book the honeymoon in the name on the passport you will travel with.

  • The simplest option: travel in your old name and change your passport when you are home.

  • The UK option: HM Passport Office lets you apply for a passport in your new name up to three months before the wedding. The passport is post-dated and cannot be used before the ceremony.

  • Visas: some countries will not issue visas for post-dated passports, and travel permits such as the US ESTA are linked to the passport number.

  • Our hotel pick for the night before: Sofitel London Heathrow, linked to Terminal 5 and rated 8.8 out of 10 from 5,147 reviews on Hotels.com.

This guide is part of our plan your honeymoon series, together with how much a honeymoon costs.

Option 1: travel in your old name

This is the option with the least that can go wrong. Keep your current passport, book the flights and hotels in the name it shows, and apply for a passport in your new name after the honeymoon. Your marriage certificate does not need to come with you, since the passport and the ticket already match.

It also means no deadline pressure in the busy weeks before the wedding. The only thing to remember is to use the old name for every booking, including the hotels, transfers and any internal flights.

Option 2: a post-dated passport in your new name

If you want to travel in your new name, the UK has a scheme for exactly this. You can apply for a passport in your new name up to three months before the wedding, using the form for newly-weds and civil partners. The person who will conduct the ceremony, such as the registrar or the minister, must sign it.

There are two catches. Your old passport is cancelled when you apply, and the new one is post-dated, so you cannot use it to travel until the day of the ceremony. A hen or stag weekend abroad in the weeks before the wedding is therefore out with this option. Book every part of the honeymoon in your new name.

Visas, ESTA and entry rules

Check the entry rules for every country on the route, including any stopover. Some countries will not issue visas for post-dated passports, so contact the embassy before you apply. Electronic travel permits are tied to the passport number, so a new passport means a new application for the US ESTA and similar schemes. Many countries also want at least six months of validity left on arrival.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), the UK government department for foreign affairs, publishes entry requirements for each country in its travel advice. Check it again a few weeks before departure.

If the names on the booking do not match

Contact the airline as soon as you notice. Most airlines can correct a name, often for a fee, as long as the traveller stays the same person. Do it well before departure, not at the check-in desk. Hotels usually only need the name for check-in, but tell them too, so the booking is easy to find.

The night before you fly

An early long-haul flight after a wedding weekend is easier from a hotel at the airport. At Heathrow, Sofitel London Heathrow is linked to Terminal 5 by a covered walkway, so you can leave the luggage on a trolley and walk to check-in. Flying from Gatwick instead? Sofitel London Gatwick is linked to the North Terminal and rated 9.0 out of 10 from 2,228 reviews. Our verdict

What Picolo recommends: travel in your old name and change the passport when you are home.

Why: it removes every risk of a name mismatch, a cancelled passport or a visa problem, and leaves the paperwork for a quieter week.

The trade-off: you start married life in your old name for a couple of weeks. If that matters to you, the post-dated passport works well, as long as every booking uses the new name.

Frequently asked questions

Can I go on honeymoon with my maiden name on my passport?

Yes, you can go on honeymoon with your maiden name on your passport, as long as the flights and hotels are booked in the same name. The name on the ticket must match the passport you travel with. Many couples do this and change the passport after the honeymoon, which avoids any risk of a mismatch or a cancelled passport before the trip.

How early can I get a passport in my married name?

In the UK you can apply for a passport in your new name up to three months before the wedding. HM Passport Office issues it post-dated, so it cannot be used until the day of the ceremony. Your old passport is cancelled when you apply, which rules out trips abroad in the weeks before the wedding.

Should I book my honeymoon in my maiden or married name?

Book your honeymoon in the name on the passport you will travel with. If you keep your current passport for the trip, use your maiden name. If you get a post-dated passport in your new name before the wedding, use your married name for every booking, including hotels, transfers and internal flights.

What happens if the name on my ticket does not match my passport?

If the name on your ticket does not match your passport, the airline can refuse to let you board. Contact the airline as soon as you notice. Most airlines can correct the name, often for a fee, as long as the traveller is the same person. Do this well before departure rather than at the check-in desk, and check that the hotel bookings match too.
