Mexico honeymoon: beaches, cenotes and the six hotels we recommend
A Mexico honeymoon gives you the turquoise Caribbean coast, swims in jungle cenotes and Maya ruins in one trip. Combine a few nights inland with a week by the sea, and you have one of the most varied honeymoons there is.

Mexico suits couples who want a beach with something to explore. This guide sets out a route along the Yucatán peninsula, the six hotels we recommend for couples, when to go, and how to get there from London and Oslo.
In short: Mexico honeymoon
The route: three or four nights inland at Chichén Itzá or Valladolid, then a week on the Riviera Maya. Add Isla Holbox or Mexico City if you have time.
Where to stay: Hotel Esencia at Xpu-Ha, NIZUC in Cancún and Casa Las Tortugas on Holbox.
All inclusive: Grand Velas Riviera Maya, or Excellence Playa Mujeres for adults only.
When to go: December to April is the dry season. June to November is hurricane season.
Getting there: direct flights from London to Cancún, and one change from Oslo.
Our first choice: Hotel Esencia, a former private estate on a quiet bay between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. See our guide to Tulum and the Riviera Maya.
This guide is part of our Caribbean honeymoon guide and our best honeymoon destinations series. For the whole country, see our Mexico travel guide.
How to plan a Mexico honeymoon
Start inland, where the days are about ruins, colonial towns and swims in cenotes, the natural pools in the limestone. Our guide to cenotes and Chichén Itzá covers the best of them. Then drive to the coast for the rest of the trip, and let the beach take over.
If you want a quieter island, take the ferry to Isla Holbox, where there are no cars and the sandbars stretch far out into the sea. For food and culture, add a few nights in Mexico City before you fly home.
Where to stay: six hotels for a Mexico honeymoon
Hotel Esencia, Xpu-Ha
A former private estate on a quiet bay between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, once the home of an Italian duchess. The cottages stand in a large jungle garden, several with their own pool, and the beach is right below.
Best for: couples who want a small, private hotel by the sea.
NIZUC Resort and Spa, Cancún
NIZUC sits on the point at the southern end of the Hotel Zone, about a quarter of an hour from the airport. The resort has two beaches, six restaurants and a large spa, and many of the villas have their own pool. See our Cancún travel guide.
Best for: luxury without staying in the thick of the Hotel Zone.

Grand Velas Riviera Maya
Grand Velas is south of Playa del Carmen, about 45 minutes from Cancún airport. The resort is split into three sections, one of them for adults and children over twelve only, and every room has its own hot tub.
Best for: couples who want all inclusive at a high level.
Excellence Playa Mujeres
An adults-only, all-inclusive resort north of Cancún, on a quieter stretch of coast than the Hotel Zone. See our guide to all inclusive in Mexico for more resorts.
Best for: couples who want all inclusive with no children around.
Hacienda Chichen Resort and Yaxkin Spa
An old hacienda with a spa and gardens beside Chichén Itzá, so you can see the ruins early in the morning before the coaches arrive.
Best for: a night or two inland among the ruins and the cenotes.
Casa Las Tortugas, Isla Holbox
A family-run beach hotel on Holbox, one of the island's best-known places to stay, a short walk from the village. Holbox has no cars, so you move about on foot, by bike or by golf cart.
Best for: couples who want a barefoot island after the busy coast.

Getting to Mexico from London and Oslo
The flying time to Cancún is about 10 hours from London on a direct flight, and about 12 hours 30 minutes from Oslo with one change, for example in Frankfurt. Cancún airport lies south of the city, close to the Hotel Zone and the Riviera Maya.
To Tulum: the drive takes about two hours, and Tulum also has its own international airport.
To Chichén Itzá and Valladolid: about two and a half to three hours inland by road.
To Holbox: a drive to Chiquilá, then a short ferry ride.
When to go
December to April is the best time, in the dry season with sunshine and a calm sea. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, with the highest risk from August to October. In summer, sargassum seaweed can also wash up on the Caribbean coast, so check the beach before you book. On Holbox, the whale shark season runs through the summer months.

Our pick in Mexico
Hotel Esencia: a duchess's estate on the Riviera Maya
Hotel Esencia lies on a quiet bay at Xpu-Ha, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, on a former private estate that once belonged to an Italian duchess. The cottages stand in a large jungle garden, several with their own pool, and the beach is right below. Guests give it 9.6 out of 10, and it feels like staying with friends rather than in a resort.
Our verdict
What Picolo chooses: Hotel Esencia for a private estate by the sea, a night at Hacienda Chichen for the ruins and cenotes, and Casa Las Tortugas on Holbox for a few barefoot days.
Why: Mexico gives you beach, culture and nature in one trip, with direct flights from London and a dry season that matches the British and Norwegian winter.
The trade-off: the coast near Cancún and Tulum is busy, and the summer brings sargassum and hurricane risk. Choose quieter bays, and travel between December and April.
Frequently asked questions
Is Mexico good for a honeymoon?
Yes, Mexico is one of the best honeymoon destinations within reach of the UK. In one trip you can combine Maya ruins, swims in cenotes and a week on the Caribbean coast, with direct flights from London to Cancún. Hotels range from small estates by the sea to all-inclusive resorts, so it suits most budgets and styles.
Where should we stay in Mexico on honeymoon?
Stay on the Riviera Maya between Playa del Carmen and Tulum for the beach, at hotels such as Hotel Esencia, or at NIZUC on the quiet southern tip of Cancún's Hotel Zone. Add a night near Chichén Itzá or in Valladolid for the ruins and cenotes, and end on Isla Holbox if you want a calmer island.
When is the best time for a Mexico honeymoon?
December to April is the best time for a Mexico honeymoon, in the dry season with sunshine and a calm sea on the Caribbean coast. June to November is hurricane season, with the highest risk from August to October, and sargassum seaweed can wash up in summer. Book early for Christmas, New Year and Easter.
Is all inclusive a good idea in Mexico?
All inclusive works well in Cancún and on the Riviera Maya, where many resorts lie far from towns and restaurants. Grand Velas Riviera Maya and the adults-only Excellence Playa Mujeres are two of our picks. In Tulum, on Holbox and inland, a room with breakfast gives you the freedom to eat in local restaurants.
