It is seven in the evening and the sun is still high over the Ionian Sea. The water below the jetty is so clear you can see the seabed four metres down, and warm enough to stay in for a long time. It is June in Corfu, and there is still space on the jetty.

June is when the Mediterranean warms up, but before school holidays fill the flights and hotels. We picked six places with daytime highs between 25 and 28°C and a sea of around 22 to 25°C. Figures are average daytime highs for the month.

In short: where is it hot in June?

The hottest places on our list in June are Alanya and Corfu, at around 28°C by day, with Crete close behind at about 27°C. Ibiza and Santorini reach around 26°C and Palermo about 25°C. For festivals and the midnight sun instead, see the best places to travel in June.

  • Hottest: Alanya

  • Best for green landscapes: Corfu

  • Best for design and calm: Crete

  • Best for sunsets: Santorini

  • Best for city and beach: Palermo

Alanya: the warmest sea for families

Alanya averages around 28°C by day in June, with the sea near 25°C. That is the warmest water on our list, and the beaches west of town are long and shallow.

Spend the days on the beach and by the pool and the evenings in the old harbour. Boat trips run along the coast to caves below the castle rock.

The catch: the first holiday flights arrive from mid June and the big resorts fill up. The first half of the month is calmer. Read our Alanya guide.

Granada Okurcalar: a water park for everyone

Granada Luxury Resort Okurcalar includes its own water park, six restaurants and a spa with a hammam, all in the price. In June children rarely queue for the slides. It is big and busy, and Alanya town is half an hour away.

Corfu: green to the water's edge

Corfu averages around 28°C by day in June, with the sea near 22°C. The island is greener than most of Greece, with olive groves and cypresses running down to the coves.

Walk the streets of Corfu Town, where Venetian and British buildings stand side by side, and drive to Paleokastritsa on the west coast for its bays and clifftop monastery.

The catch: roads are narrow and winding, and journeys take longer than the map suggests. Read about Corfu's best beaches.

Domes Miramare: a jetty in an old garden

Domes Miramare sits south of Corfu Town in an old garden of tall trees, with a swimming jetty just below. It is adults only and quiet in the afternoons. A good choice for couples who want town within a short drive.

Crete: summer on the east coast

Crete averages around 27°C by day in June, with the sea near 22°C. It is warm enough for long beach days without the heat of July and August.

In the east, Agios Nikolaos is a likeable small town around a lake, with boats to Spinalonga. Spend a day driving up to the Lasithi Plateau in the mountains.

The catch: a warm southerly wind can bring dust and haze on some days. Keep an eye on the forecast. Read about Crete's best beaches.

Minos Beach Art Hotel: bungalows on the point

Minos Beach Art Hotel has white bungalows on a point near Agios Nikolaos, with sculptures among the trees and private swimming spots. You can walk into town along the water in the evening. It suits couples who want design and calm with restaurants nearby.

Ibiza: the north before high season

Ibiza averages around 26°C by day in June, with the sea near 22°C. The clubs have opened, but the island is calmer than in July and August, especially in the north.

Swim in the coves at Portinatx and Benirràs and watch the sunset from the west-coast cliffs. The old town of Dalt Vila is best in the evening.

The catch: prices climb fast towards the end of June. Book early and hire a car. Read our Ibiza guide.

Hacienda Na Xamena: on the north-west cliffs

Hacienda Na Xamena sits high on the cliffs above the bay at Sant Miquel, with terraces and a pool that hang over the sea. The sunset is the reason to stay. It is remote, up a winding road, so you need a car.

Santorini: the caldera rim before the crowds

Santorini averages around 26°C by day in June, with the sea near 22°C. The island is dry and sunny, and the northerly wind keeps the heat in check.

Walk the caldera path from Fira to Oia, swim from the black and red beaches in the south and taste wine grown in volcanic soil at one of the wineries.

The catch: Oia is packed at sunset and cruise ships make Fira busy. Watch the sunset from your hotel. Read our Santorini guide.

Canaves Oia Suites: white terraces in Oia

Canaves Oia Suites has white suites and pools stepping down towards the caldera in Oia. From your terrace you see the sunset without joining the crowd in the village. Expensive, and best for a trip with something to celebrate.

Palermo: city and beach in Sicily

Palermo averages around 25°C by day in June, with the sea near 22°C. That makes June a good month to combine city and beach before July and August heat up.

Eat street food at the Ballarò market, see the mosaics at Monreale and take the bus to Mondello, the city's own beach under the mountain.

The catch: Palermo traffic is chaotic and driving in the centre is not worth it. Read about Sicily's best beaches.

Villa Igiea: an art nouveau villa by the sea

Rocco Forte Villa Igiea stands on the water at Acquasanta, north of the centre, in an art nouveau villa with gardens down to the sea. Both the city and Mondello are close. A calm base for couples who want Palermo within reach.
