Mini-moon ideas: short honeymoons in the UK and Europe

A mini-moon is a short honeymoon of three to five nights, usually straight after the wedding. It gives you time to rest together before everyday life starts again, and many couples save the big trip for a better season or a bigger budget.

This guide covers the best places for a mini-moon in the UK and a short flight or train ride away in Europe, with the hotels we recommend. It is part of our best honeymoon destinations series and our guide to honeymoon destinations in Europe.

In short: the best mini-moon ideas

  • Lake District: fells, lakes and a spa hotel near Windermere.

  • The Cotswolds: honey-coloured villages and country house hotels.

  • Scotland: a country house near Stirling, close to the Highlands.

  • Cornwall: coast paths, a golf course and a spa near Falmouth.

  • Paris: about 2 hours 20 minutes by Eurostar from London St Pancras.

  • Rome, the Amalfi Coast and Santorini: a short flight for sun, food and sea views.

Our first choice: three or four nights at Gilpin Hotel & Lake House in the Lake District, with no flights and no airport queues after the wedding. For a city instead, our guide to a romantic weekend away has the hotels we recommend.

What is a mini-moon?

A mini-moon is a short honeymoon, usually three to five nights, taken right after the wedding. Some couples choose it because the best season for their dream destination comes later. Others want a calm break before going back to work, and plan the long trip for the first anniversary.

A mini-moon works best close to home. Choose a place you can reach in a few hours, book one hotel for the whole stay, and keep the plans simple. Our honeymoon calendar helps you choose the month for the big trip later.

Mini-moon in the UK

Gilpin Hotel & Lake House, Lake District

Gilpin is a short drive from Lake Windermere, in the south of the Lake District. It has a spa with massages and aromatherapy, two restaurants including SOURCE at Gilpin, and a garden and terrace for long evenings. Windermere is reached by train from London Euston with a change at Oxenholme.

Lords of the Manor, the Cotswolds

Lords of the Manor is a country house hotel in Upper Slaughter, one of the quietest villages in the Cotswolds. It has two restaurants, including the Atrium for dinner, a bar, a terrace and a garden. The train from London Paddington takes you to the nearest stations in about an hour and a half, and a short taxi ride does the rest.

Cromlix, Scotland

Cromlix is a country house hotel near Dunblane, between Stirling and the Highlands, with a railway station close by. It has three restaurants, two bars, a library, an outdoor tennis court and treatment rooms for massages. It suits couples who want Scotland without a long drive.

Budock Vean, Cornwall

Budock Vean is a hotel with its own golf course near Falmouth in Cornwall. The spa offers deep-tissue massages, body wraps and aromatherapy, and there is an indoor pool, a hot tub and two bars. Cornwall is a long journey from London, so plan at least three nights.

How to plan a mini-moon

  • Book one hotel: with only a few nights, every move between hotels costs you time together.

  • Keep the journey short: a train or a flight of under four hours leaves more of the first day for rest.

  • Tell the hotel: many hotels mark a honeymoon with a small extra, so mention it when you book.

  • Plan the big trip later: our guide to planning your honeymoon covers budget, length and booking.

Our pick in the UK

Gilpin Hotel & Lake House: a garden suite and a spa near Windermere

Gilpin Hotel & Lake House is a short drive from Lake Windermere, with a spa, two restaurants and a garden that is lit up in the evening. The garden suites have their own terrace, some with a hot tub, so the first evening of married life can start outside your own door. It is the UK mini-moon we recommend when you want rest, good food and no flights.

Our verdict

What Picolo chooses: Gilpin in the Lake District for a mini-moon in the UK, Paris by Eurostar for a city break, and Rome with Hotel de Russie for food and history.

Why: all three are a few hours from London, and each gives you a different kind of rest after the wedding.

The trade-off: the weather in the UK is never certain, and Paris and Rome are busy at weekends, so a mini-moon from Sunday to Thursday is calmer.

Frequently asked questions

What is a mini-moon?

A mini-moon is a short honeymoon of three to five nights, usually taken straight after the wedding. Many couples choose one when the best season for their dream destination comes later, or when they want a calm break before going back to work. The long honeymoon often follows months later.

How long should a mini-moon be?

Three to five nights is the usual length for a mini-moon. That is enough to rest and enjoy one place without spending too much of the trip travelling. Choose a destination within a few hours by train or plane, and stay in one hotel for the whole break.

Where can we go for a mini-moon in the UK?

The Lake District, the Cotswolds, the Scottish countryside near Stirling and the Cornish coast are four of the best choices. Each has country house or spa hotels made for couples, and all can be reached by train from London. Gilpin near Windermere is our first choice.

Should we have a mini-moon and a honeymoon?

Many couples do. A mini-moon gives you a few quiet days right after the wedding, and the long honeymoon can wait for the best season or a bigger budget. Our honeymoon calendar shows which months suit the Maldives, Bali, Mauritius and the rest of the world.
