Caribbean honeymoon: the islands and hotels we recommend for couples

The Caribbean is the classic winter honeymoon from the UK, with direct flights and warm seas when it is dark at home. Each island has its own character, so choose the island first and the hotel second.

A Caribbean honeymoon can mean volcanic peaks and rainforest on St Lucia, an all-inclusive bay on Antigua, or the long white beaches of Anguilla and Turks and Caicos. This guide helps you choose the island, sets out one hotel we recommend on each, and explains when to go and how to get there from London and Oslo.

In short: Caribbean honeymoon

  • For drama: St Lucia, with the Pitons, rainforest and rooms that open onto the view.

  • For all inclusive: Antigua, where Curtain Bluff includes almost everything.

  • For a classic west coast: Barbados, with calm sea and small hotels.

  • For the beaches: Anguilla and Turks and Caicos, with some of the best sand in the region.

  • When to go: December to April is the dry season. June to November is hurricane season.

Our first choice: Jade Mountain on St Lucia, where the fourth wall of the room is missing, so you look straight at the Pitons from your own pool. See our St Lucia travel guide.

This guide is part of our best honeymoon destinations series. For the whole region, see the best Caribbean islands.

How to choose your island

Start with what you want to do between the beach days. St Lucia suits couples who want to hike, see waterfalls and eat well, while Anguilla and Turks and Caicos are for long days on the sand. Antigua and Barbados sit in between, with good beaches, restaurants and direct flights from London.

If you want the Caribbean Sea with ruins and cenotes, look at Mexico. Our guide to Tulum and the Riviera Maya covers that coast. For rainforest and wildlife, see our Costa Rica honeymoon guide.

Six islands, six hotels for a honeymoon

St Lucia: Jade Mountain

Jade Mountain is famous for rooms where one wall is simply missing, so you look straight out at the Pitons from your bed and your own pool. Anse Chastanet beach lies just below.

Best for: couples who want the most dramatic view in the Caribbean.

Antigua: Curtain Bluff

A classic all-inclusive hotel on a headland on the south coast of Antigua. Every room has a balcony or terrace, and the beach is close by. See our Antigua travel guide.

Best for: couples who want everything included without a big resort.

Barbados: Cobblers Cove

A small beach hotel on the west coast, near Speightstown and Mullins Beach, with breakfast included and a balcony or terrace in every room. See our Barbados travel guide.

Best for: couples who want peace and a short walk to the sea.

Anguilla: Malliouhana

Malliouhana sits on the cliff at the end of Meads Bay, with views over the beach, a pool and steps down to the sand. It is one of the island's classic hotels. See our guide to the best hotels in Anguilla.

Best for: couples who want a view and a quiet beach below.

Turks and Caicos: Point Grace

Point Grace is a small hotel on Grace Bay in British colonial style, with large suites, a pool by the beach and a spa in the garden. See our guide to the best hotels in Turks and Caicos.

Best for: couples who want a smaller hotel on one of the best beaches in the region.

Bahamas: The Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort

The Ocean Club occupies the quietest part of Paradise Island, with a long white beach and terraced gardens. See our guide to the best hotels in the Bahamas.

Best for: couples who want glamour and an easy journey.

Getting to the Caribbean from London and Oslo

St Lucia, Antigua and Barbados have direct flights from London, about 8 to 8 hours 30 minutes. From Oslo, the simplest route is a change in London, about 10 to 10 hours 30 minutes in the air.

  • Anguilla: there is no long-haul airport, so you fly to Antigua or St Maarten and continue by small plane or ferry.

  • Turks and Caicos and the Bahamas: about 8 hours 30 minutes from London, with a stop or change on some routes.

  • St Lucia: long-haul flights land at Hewanorra in the south, close to the Pitons.

When to go

December to April is the dry season, with sunshine, a steady breeze and the highest prices over Christmas and Easter. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, and the risk is highest from August to October. Many couples who marry in summer travel in the autumn instead, or choose Mexico or Costa Rica, where the seasons differ.

Our pick in the Caribbean

Jade Mountain: a room with no fourth wall above the Pitons

Jade Mountain stands on the hillside above Anse Chastanet on St Lucia, and each sanctuary has one wall missing, so the Pitons and the sea fill the view from your bed and your own pool. Guests give it 9.8 out of 10, and no other Caribbean hotel frames a honeymoon quite like it.

Our verdict

What Picolo chooses: Jade Mountain on St Lucia for the view, Curtain Bluff on Antigua for all inclusive, and Malliouhana on Anguilla for a quiet beach below the cliff.

Why: the Caribbean gives you a warm sea in the middle of winter with direct flights from London, and the islands are different enough that every couple can find the right one.

The trade-off: prices peak over Christmas, New Year and Easter, and the best rooms sell first. Book six to twelve months ahead, or travel in January or early December.

Planning a honeymoon? Our Mexico honeymoon guide combines the cenotes and Maya ruins with a week on the Riviera Maya, with six hotels for couples.

Frequently asked questions

Which Caribbean island is best for a honeymoon?

St Lucia is the best Caribbean island for a honeymoon if you want drama, with the Pitons, rainforest and hotels such as Jade Mountain. Antigua suits couples who want all inclusive, Barbados has the calm west coast, and Anguilla and Turks and Caicos have the finest beaches. Choose the island first and the hotel second.

When is the best time for a Caribbean honeymoon?

December to April is the best time for a Caribbean honeymoon, in the dry season with sunshine and a cooling breeze. Early December and January, outside the holiday weeks, often give better value. June to November is hurricane season, with the highest risk from August to October, so check the terms and travel insurance if you travel then.

How long is the flight to the Caribbean from the UK?

The flight from London to St Lucia, Antigua or Barbados takes about 8 to 8 hours 30 minutes on a direct flight. The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos take about the same, with a stop on some routes. Anguilla has no long-haul airport, so you change in Antigua or St Maarten and continue by small plane or ferry.

Is all inclusive a good idea for a Caribbean honeymoon?

All inclusive works well in the Caribbean, where restaurants outside the resorts can be far apart and drinks are expensive. Curtain Bluff on Antigua includes almost everything in one price. On islands with good restaurants, such as Barbados and Anguilla, a room with breakfast gives you more freedom to eat out.
