New Year breaks in the UK 2026: Hogmanay, London fireworks or a quiet spa hotel
A torchlit procession through Edinburgh, fireworks over the Thames or a thermal pool in Bath while the rest of the country queues for a taxi. Here are the three New Year breaks in the UK we would book for 2026, with the dates, the practical catches and a hotel for each.

In short: New Year breaks in the UK 2026
Edinburgh's Hogmanay: 29 December 2026 to 1 January 2027, with the Street Party on Princes Street on New Year's Eve.
London: the fireworks on the Thames are ticket only. Entry to the viewing areas is from 8pm to 10.30pm on 31 December.
A quiet New Year: Bath, with a spa fed by the city's natural thermal water.
Our first choice: Check availability and prices at The Balmoral, Edinburgh
Book the hotel first and the events second. Hotels near the action sell out for 30 and 31 December long before the event programmes are complete. Tickets for the Street Party and the London fireworks are released in batches.
Edinburgh's Hogmanay: three nights of New Year
Edinburgh's Hogmanay runs from 29 December 2026 to 1 January 2027. It opens on 29 December with the Torchlight Procession from the Meadows through the Old Town. The Night Afore Concert follows at the Ross Bandstand in Princes Street Gardens on 30 December.
On New Year's Eve there are ceilidhs, a candlelit concert in St Giles' Cathedral and the Concert in the Gardens. At the Street Party on Princes Street, around 45,000 people count down to midnight under the castle. New Year's Day has free events, including a family ceilidh.
The catch: Princes Street is closed for the Street Party, and some events need tickets. If your hotel is inside the area, ask how guests get in and out on 31 December. Programme details and tickets are on edwinterfest.com.
London: the fireworks on the Thames
London's New Year's Eve fireworks are launched around the London Eye, and the viewing areas along the river are ticket only. Everyone needs a ticket, including children under 16, and without one you will not be let in. Tickets are released in two batches through Ticketmaster.
There are six viewing areas on both banks, from a head-on view on the north bank to areas on Waterloo and Westminster bridges and directly behind the London Eye. Entry to all of them is from 8pm to 10.30pm, and the event ends at 12.30am.
The alternative: a hotel room with a river view. For the full list, see our guide to New Year's Eve hotels in London.
A quiet New Year in Bath
Not everyone wants a crowd at midnight. Bath is about an hour and a half from London Paddington by train, and over New Year it is calm, compact and easy to walk. Spend New Year's Eve over a long dinner and New Year's Day in warm thermal water rather than nursing a hangover in a queue.
The Gainsborough Bath Spa is the hotel to book for this: it has its own spa fed by Bath's natural thermal springs. It is a short walk from the Roman Baths and the abbey. Guests rate it 9.2 out of 10 across more than 1,000 reviews on Expedia.
Where to stay for New Year
The Balmoral, Edinburgh
The Balmoral stands at the east end of Princes Street, beside Waverley station and below the castle. You are a few minutes from the Street Party and the Concert in the Gardens, and back in your room soon after midnight. Guests rate it 9.8 out of 10 across more than 1,000 reviews on Hotels.com.

Market Street Hotel, Edinburgh
A modern hotel by Waverley station, at the foot of the Old Town and a short walk from both the Royal Mile and Princes Street. A good choice if you want to be close to the events without staying on the Street Party route itself. Guests rate it 9.8 out of 10 across more than 1,500 reviews on Hotels.com.
Check availability and prices at Market Street Hotel
Park Plaza Westminster Bridge, London
On the south bank by Westminster Bridge, a few hundred metres from the London Eye. Rooms on the river side look towards the fireworks, and there is an indoor pool and a spa for New Year's Day. Guests rate it 9.0 out of 10 across more than 6,000 reviews on Expedia.

Our recommendation
The Balmoral: New Year at the end of Princes Street
The Balmoral is at the east end of Princes Street, beside Waverley station and a few minutes from the Hogmanay Street Party. It shares the highest guest rating on this page with Market Street Hotel. After midnight you are back in your room while everyone else is still looking for a taxi.
What Picolo would choose
What Picolo would choose: The Balmoral for Hogmanay, Park Plaza Westminster Bridge for the London fireworks from your window, and The Gainsborough Bath Spa for a quiet New Year.
Why: Edinburgh gives you three nights of events rather than one countdown, and The Balmoral puts you a few minutes from all of them.
The trade-off: The Balmoral and Park Plaza are among the most sought-after rooms of the year on 31 December, so prices are high and minimum stays are common. Bath is calmer and easier to book, but there is no big public countdown.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the best place in the UK for New Year?
Edinburgh is the classic choice, with Hogmanay events from 29 December to 1 January and a Street Party on Princes Street. London has the biggest fireworks, but you need a ticket for the viewing areas. For a quieter New Year, choose a spa town such as Bath, where you can spend New Year's Day in thermal water.
When is Edinburgh's Hogmanay 2026?
Edinburgh's Hogmanay runs from 29 December 2026 to 1 January 2027. The Torchlight Procession is on 29 December, the Night Afore Concert on 30 December, and the Street Party and Concert in the Gardens on New Year's Eve. New Year's Day has free family events. Check edwinterfest.com for tickets and the full programme.
Do you need a ticket for the London New Year's Eve fireworks?
Yes. All the official viewing areas along the Thames are ticket only, and everyone needs a ticket, including children under 16. Tickets are released in batches through Ticketmaster. Entry is from 8pm to 10.30pm on 31 December. If you miss out, a hotel room with a river view is the easiest alternative.
How far in advance should you book a New Year break in the UK?
Book the hotel as early as you can, ideally in the autumn. Hotels near Princes Street in Edinburgh and along the Thames in London fill up first, and many require a minimum stay over 30 and 31 December. Choose a rate with free cancellation, then add event tickets when they are released.
Is New Year in Edinburgh good for families?
Yes, if you choose the right events. The Torchlight Procession and the free New Year's Day programme, including the family ceilidh, work well for children. The Street Party on New Year's Eve is crowded and runs past midnight, so many families watch the fireworks from their hotel or elsewhere in the city instead.
