A romantic hotel is rarely about rose petals on the bed. It is about staying somewhere with a story, in a room unlike anything at home. And about a city outside the door that is good to walk in, even in the rain.

London has no shortage of luxury hotels. We have picked five that stand out for two people celebrating something, whether it is an anniversary, a proposal or simply a weekend away.

In short: London's romantic hotels

The Ritz on Green Park is the classic choice, with Louis XVI salons dating from 1906. The Goring in Belgravia has its own garden and has been run by the same family since 1910. For something you have never done before, you can sleep inside an Antony Gormley sculpture at The Beaumont.

Our first choice: The Ritz London, for an anniversary or a proposal.

Mayfair and St James's

The Ritz London

The hotel opened in 1906, designed by Mewès and Davis in the French Louis XVI style. Architectural historian Marcus Binney has called its ground-floor rooms one of the masterpieces of hotel architecture. Tea in the Palm Court is a ritual, and The Ritz Restaurant won its second Michelin star in 2025. With 111 rooms, the hotel is smaller than many expect.

The Beaumont

Above the hotel's frontage on Brown Hart Gardens in Mayfair crouches a giant stainless-steel figure. It is the work of Antony Gormley, and inside is a bedroom clad in fumed oak. The suite is called ROOM and is one of 23 suites in a 73-room hotel. Book it if you want a night nobody you know has had.

Belgravia and Holborn

The Goring

Otto Goring built the hotel in 1910, and his family has run it ever since. It stands on a quiet Belgravia street, a short walk from St James's Park and Buckingham Palace. It is the only hotel ever granted a Royal Warrant by Queen Elizabeth II. The hotel describes its garden as the most spacious private garden in central London.

Rosewood London

You walk in from High Holborn through an archway into a courtyard, and the traffic noise falls away behind you. The hotel occupies an Edwardian building, and 44 of its rooms are suites. Holborn sits between the West End and the City, close to the theatres. Choose Rosewood for space, good food and a little distance from the Mayfair crowds.

On the river

The Savoy

Many of the 267 rooms and suites look out over the Thames. The hotel opened in 1889 as the first purpose-built luxury hotel in Britain. Ask for a river room and end the evening at the American Bar. Covent Garden and the Strand are right on the doorstep.

Before you book

  • Tell the hotel what you are celebrating: Add it to your booking. Many hotels like to know, and some will mark the occasion on arrival.

  • Book dinner at the same time: The restaurants at The Ritz and The Savoy fill up at weekends, especially in December and around 14 February.

  • Choose the room type carefully: River, park and suite views come with the room type. The cheapest room in a luxury hotel can be small and face a courtyard.

  • Afternoon tea is a meal: Tea at The Ritz or The Goring easily replaces lunch, so plan dinner accordingly.

Editor's pick

The Ritz London

The Ritz London is the hotel for an evening you will talk about for years. Walk the Long Gallery under the chandeliers, dine in the two-Michelin-star restaurant and finish with a drink in the Rivoli Bar. In the morning, Green Park is right outside the window. Rooms are dressed in Louis XVI style with gilded details, and the staff are used to anniversaries and proposals. Tell them what you are celebrating when you book.

Frequently asked questions about romantic hotels in London

What is the most romantic hotel in London?

The Ritz London is the classic answer, with Louis XVI salons from 1906 and afternoon tea in the Palm Court. For something quieter, The Goring in Belgravia has its own garden and has been run by one family since 1910. The right choice depends on whether you want grand or intimate.

Where should I stay in London on honeymoon?

Mayfair and St James's suit a honeymoon, with The Ritz and The Beaumont within walking distance of Hyde Park and Green Park. For views of the Thames, The Savoy on the Strand is a good choice. Mention your honeymoon in the booking so the hotel knows when you arrive.

Which London hotel is best for a proposal?

The Ritz London and The Savoy are classic choices for a proposal, with historic rooms and restaurants whose staff are used to big nights. Contact the hotel before you travel if you want help with flowers, champagne or a particular table. Many London luxury hotels can arrange this in advance.

When should I book a romantic hotel in London?

Book two to three months ahead for December or Valentine's Day, when rooms at the best-known hotels sell out first. Midweek stays are often quieter and cheaper than weekends. Reserve restaurant tables when you book the room. Rooms facing the park or the river go first, so book those early if the view matters.
