The best hotels in Ibiza: nine places to stay, from clubs to quiet coves

At six in the morning, the last clubbers drift out of the venues at Playa d'en Bossa as the sun rises over the sea. An hour north, in Sant Llorenç, a farmer walks between orange trees while someone reads the paper over coffee on the village square. Both are Ibiza. The hotel you choose decides which island you get.

Ibiza is the third largest of the Balearic Islands, and it has two very different faces. In the south-west are the clubs and beach clubs that made the island world-famous, partying from June to October. North and east of the capital there are pine forests, small coves, old farmhouses and white village churches, and evenings are quiet. Ibiza Town has a walled old quarter, Dalt Vila, listed by UNESCO.

Plenty of people assume Ibiza is all about the party, but the island is at least as good for couples, families and anyone after peace, food and swimming. The season is short, and many hotels close from November to April. Rates in July and August are among the highest in the Mediterranean. Flights from the UK take around two and a half hours. We have chosen nine hotels across the town, the west coast, the east and the north-west. Links go to Hotels.com, and we always choose the hotel before the link.

In short: where to stay in Ibiza

For the party, stay close to Ibiza Town or in Sant Antoni, with a short ride to the clubs and beach bars. For peace, coves and good food, Santa Eulària on the east coast and the north are better. Ibiza Town and Talamanca suit anyone who wants both, with restaurants, the old town and a short taxi ride to the clubs.

How to choose a hotel in Ibiza

  • Party or peace: Playa d'en Bossa and San Antonio are party zones. With children or a need for sleep, choose the east or north.

  • Taxis are scarce and pricey: in high season there are queues. A hire car makes it far easier to reach the northern coves.

  • A short season: many hotels and restaurants close in winter. Check opening dates before planning outside the summer.

  • Beach clubs cost: loungers at the beach clubs can be expensive. Many of the loveliest coves have free beach just a few metres away.

  • Formentera is close: the boat to neighbouring Formentera leaves Ibiza Town and takes about half an hour. Stay in town for an easy day trip.

Ibiza Town and Talamanca: the old town and harbour

Ibiza Town has Dalt Vila on the hill, shops and restaurants around the harbour, and the calm bay of Talamanca just north. From here the clubs and the Formentera boats are both close.

Mirador de Dalt Vila: a small hotel inside the walls

Hotel Mirador de Dalt Vila sits within the walls of the old town, in an old house with few rooms, art on the walls and a terrace overlooking the harbour. It is one of very few hotels inside Dalt Vila.

It appeals to couples who want a small, exclusive hotel in the old town, with the restaurants and fortress outside the door. It is a good choice if you want to explore Ibiza Town on foot. There is no beach and the climb into the old town is steep. In the evening, once the day visitors leave, the lanes fall quiet and the views from the walls are at their best.

The Standard, Ibiza: a roof terrace between Dalt Vila and the harbour

The Standard, Ibiza is in the centre of Ibiza Town, with the Dalt Vila old town and the Botafoch marina within walking distance. It has a roof terrace with a seasonal pool, a poolside bar, a garden and two restaurants serving Spanish food.

It is our design pick, because you get a modern, playful hotel in the middle of town, with the rooftop bar as a lookout over the harbour. It suits couples and friends who want restaurants, shops and nightlife on the doorstep, with the Formentera boats close by. It is not quiet at night, and breakfast costs extra on some rates, but you can walk home from dinner in the old town.

Nobu Ibiza Bay: right on the beach at Talamanca

Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay sits right on the beach in Talamanca Bay, a couple of kilometres from Ibiza Town. It has large pools, a spa and the Nobu restaurant, with bright rooms and balconies facing the sea.

It is a reliable choice for a first visit, with beach, good food and the town a short taxi ride away. It suits couples and families who want a calm bay near town. Rates are high in the summer months. Walk along the beach to the fish restaurants at the end of the bay, quieter than those in town.

Sant Antoni and the west coast: sunsets and beach bars

The west coast around Sant Antoni is known for its sunsets, beach bars and lively nightlife. Just outside the centre are calmer coves such as Cala Gració and Cala de Bou, with hotels that give you the sunset without sleeping in the middle of the party.

OKU Ibiza: a calm cove near Sant Antoni

OKU Ibiza stands by Cala Gració just north of Sant Antoni, with two outdoor pools, a spa, yoga and a restaurant serving breakfast and lunch. The beach in the cove is a few minutes away, and the promenade towards the sunset bars of Sant Antoni starts close by.

It is our family pick, because you get a calm, stylish hotel with room for children and a shallow cove nearby. Sant Antoni is within walking distance when you want to go out. It also suits couples who want peace by day and a sunset in the evening. It is expensive in high season, and the nightlife in Sant Antoni can carry on late.

Paradiso Ibiza Art Hotel: art and a pool at Cala de Bou

Paradiso Ibiza Art Hotel stands at Cala de Bou on the south side of the bay at Sant Antoni, and is adults-only. It is colourful and playful, with an art gallery, a poolside bar, a terrace and a garden.

It suits couples and friends who want a hotel with a sense of humour, sunsets over the bay and a short walk to the beach bars, without a children's pool. It works well if you want to experience the west coast and its nightlife. Breakfast costs extra, and the style is playful rather than luxurious. The promenade around the bay reaches Sant Antoni in about half an hour on foot.

Santa Eulària and the north: coves and calm

East and north of the capital lie Santa Eulària, a calm small town with a promenade and restaurants, and a coastline of small coves, pine forest and hippie markets. Here Ibiza is green and quiet.

BLESS Ibiza Cala Nova: a roof terrace over the east coast

BLESS Ibiza stands at Cala Nova on the east coast north of Santa Eulària, right by the sea. It has a roof terrace, a pool with a bar, a spa, two restaurants and live music on some evenings.

It suits couples and friends who want an elegant hotel by one of the good east-coast beaches, with fine food and a slower pace than the south. It works well if you want to swim in the coves and eat well. It is expensive in high season, and you will need a car or taxi to reach Ibiza Town. The hippie market at Es Canar is close by on Wednesdays.

ME Ibiza: beach and rooftop bar near Santa Eulària

ME Ibiza sits on S'Argamassa beach near Santa Eulària, with a roof terrace and bar looking out to sea, a pool and modern rooms.

It earns our value pick among the stylish hotels, offering beach, rooftop bar and good standards for less than in town or the north. It is a hotel for couples and friends. It is a grown-up hotel with music by the pool, but far from the southern party, and the east coast coves are a short drive away.

Six Senses Ibiza: the bay at the far north

Six Senses Ibiza sits on Xarraca Bay at the far north of the island, with rooms terraced down to the sea. It has a spa, gardens and restaurants using vegetables from its own farm.

It is made for travellers who want luxury and nature, far from the clubs and the traffic. It works well for couples and families who want calm. It is expensive, and Ibiza Town is half an hour by car. Sunset over Xarraca Bay is one of the most peaceful on the island.

The north-west: the cliffs at Sant Miquel

On the north-west coast, above the bay at Sant Miquel, the cliffs drop straight into the sea. There is pine forest, silence and some of the finest sunsets on the island, and the rest of Ibiza is a drive away.

Hacienda Na Xamena: the clifftop hotel in the north-west

Hacienda Na Xamena sits high on the cliffs above the bay at Sant Miquel on the north-west coast. The sea spreads out below its terraces and many of the rooms. It has a spa, a pool with a bar, a roof terrace, an art gallery and the Edén restaurant.

It is our romantic pick, because the clifftop position and the sunset over the sea make it a place for couples with something to celebrate. It suits anyone who wants peace, nature and a luxury hotel far from the party. It is remote, with a winding road up, so you will need a car. The restaurants and coves of the north are a short drive away.

When to book

  • High season: July and August are hot, full and expensive, with the clubs in full swing. Book early.

  • May, June and September: the best months for many, with a warm sea in September and fewer people. The club season opens in late May and closes in October.

  • Winter: November to April is quiet, and many hotels and restaurants close.

Hotels in Ibiza: frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to stay in Ibiza?

Ibiza Town and Sant Antoni for nightlife, Talamanca for a mix, and Santa Eulària and the north for peace and coves. On a first visit Ibiza Town is a good base, with the old town of Dalt Vila and short trips to the airport and the boats. For quiet coves, hire a car.

Is Ibiza good for families?

Yes, especially the east coast and the north, with calm coves and family-friendly hotels. Avoid the big party areas in the south, particularly in July and August. Santa Eulària and Cala Llonga have shallow water that suits small children, and several hotels with their own children’s pool.

How do you get around Ibiza?

A hire car is easiest. Buses link the towns but serve the coves less often, and taxis can be hard to find in high season. In summer, book a hire car early, as car parks at the popular coves fill before lunch. Boats also run between several beaches.

When do the Ibiza clubs open?

The club season usually opens in late May and ends with big closing parties in early October. Out of season the island is quieter and cheaper, and many hotels and restaurants in Ibiza Town and Santa Eulària stay open all year. Check opening times if you travel in winter.

Can you do a day trip to Formentera from Ibiza?

Yes, the boat from Ibiza Town takes around half an hour. Hiring a bike or scooter on Formentera is the easiest way to see its long white beaches. Take an early boat to get the most time on the island.
