La Gomera: a day trip from Tenerife, things to do and where to stay

La Gomera lies about 50 minutes by ferry from Los Cristianos, yet it feels like another world: laurel forest in the clouds, deep green valleys and black sand beaches. This is how to see it in a day, and where to stay if you want longer.

In short: La Gomera

  • Getting there: ferries sail from Los Cristianos on Tenerife to San Sebastián de La Gomera in about 50 minutes, according to Direct Ferries.

  • Must see: Garajonay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the largest continuous Canary Island laurel forest.

  • Day trip or overnight: a day is enough for Garajonay and San Sebastián. Stay two nights or more to see Valle Gran Rey.

  • Where to stay: San Sebastián for the ferry, Playa de Santiago for a resort, Valle Gran Rey for beaches and sunsets.

  • Getting around: hire a car or book a tour. The roads climb steeply through the valleys.

Our choice: Parador de La Gomera, on the clifftop above the harbour in San Sebastián, with a pool facing Teide across the sea.

Day trip or overnight?

Most visitors see La Gomera on a day trip from the south of Tenerife. The ferry leaves from Los Cristianos, close to the resorts of Costa Adeje and Playa de las Américas, so you can be in San Sebastián within an hour.

A day gives you time for the old town, a drive up into Garajonay and lunch in a mountain village. It does not give you time for Valle Gran Rey on the west coast, which lies on the far side of the island. If you want the valleys, the beaches and the sunsets in the west, stay at least two nights.

Our assessment: take the day trip if you are based on Tenerife for a week. Choose La Gomera itself if you want walking, quiet and very few large hotels.

The best things to do in La Gomera

  • Garajonay National Park: the laurel forest covers the heights in the middle of the island and is often wrapped in cloud. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, according to the IUCN World Heritage Outlook.

  • Roque de Agando: the volcanic rock towers above the road into the national park and is one of the island's best-known sights.

  • San Sebastián: the small capital by the harbour, with the Torre del Conde and the church of La Asunción.

  • Valle Gran Rey: terraced slopes running down to black sand beaches in the west, known for its sunsets.

  • Silbo gomero: the whistled language of the island, on UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2009.

  • Walking: marked trails cross the national park and lead down through the valleys.

Where to stay in La Gomera

La Gomera has few large hotels, so the area matters more than the brand.

  • San Sebastián: the capital and the ferry port, practical for a short stay.

  • Playa de Santiago: a small resort on the south coast, with the island's largest hotel.

  • Valle Gran Rey: the green valley and beaches in the west, best for a longer stay.

Parador de La Gomera

The Parador stands on the clifftop above San Sebastián, about two minutes on foot from the harbour and eight from the beach. It has an outdoor pool, a sauna and the Conde de Niebla restaurant, which serves regional food. The garden-view rooms are 15 m² and the sea-view rooms 22 m². Guests give it 9.0 out of 10 across 228 reviews on Hotels.com.

It suits couples who want character, a pool with a view and the ferry within walking distance. The trade-off is room size, so book the sea-view room.

Hotel Jardín Tecina

Jardín Tecina is the island's resort hotel, in Playa de Santiago on the south coast, about seven minutes on foot from the beach. It has five outdoor pools, five restaurants, a spa, a golf course and a free kids' club. The rooms are 32 m², and the villa suites for two adults measure 109 m². Guests give it 8.6 out of 10 on Hotels.com.

It suits families and anyone who wants everything in one place. The trade-off is distance: the harbour in San Sebastián is about 42 minutes away by car.

It suits a longer stay with beach days and sunsets in the west. Book the ocean-view room for the sunset.

Getting there from the UK

There are no direct flights from the UK to La Gomera. Fly to Tenerife South, which Jet2 serves from 13 UK bases in winter 2026/27, according to Selling Travel. From there, take a taxi or bus to Los Cristianos. Fred. Olsen Express, Naviera Armas and Baleària sail to San Sebastián, and the crossing takes about 50 minutes, according to Direct Ferries.

Car hire in La Gomera

A car gives you the freedom to stop at viewpoints and walk in Garajonay. The roads are good but steep and winding, so allow plenty of time. You can hire on La Gomera, or hire on Tenerife and check that the hire company allows the car on the ferry.

Our verdict

What Picolo chooses: a day trip from Tenerife for most visitors, and two nights at the Parador or in Valle Gran Rey for those who want the island to themselves.

Why: the ferry takes about 50 minutes, so Garajonay is easy in a day, while the west coast needs time.

The trade-off: La Gomera has few large hotels and no beach resorts on the scale of Tenerife. That is the point of going.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get to La Gomera from Tenerife?

Take the ferry from Los Cristianos on the south coast of Tenerife to San Sebastián de La Gomera. Fred. Olsen Express, Naviera Armas and Baleària sail the route, and the crossing takes about 50 minutes, according to Direct Ferries. You can take a hire car on board, which makes a day trip to Garajonay easier.

Is La Gomera worth a day trip?

Yes, if you are staying in the south of Tenerife. The ferry takes about 50 minutes, so you have time for San Sebastián, a drive up to Garajonay National Park and lunch in a mountain village. You will not have time for Valle Gran Rey on the west coast, which needs at least one night.

What is La Gomera known for?

Garajonay National Park, with the largest continuous Canary Island laurel forest, and silbo gomero, the island's whistled language. Both are on UNESCO lists. The island is also known for deep, terraced valleys, black sand beaches and very little large-scale tourism compared with Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

Where should you stay in La Gomera?

San Sebastián is practical for the ferry and has the Parador. Playa de Santiago on the south coast has the island's largest hotel, Jardín Tecina, with pools, a spa and a kids' club. Valle Gran Rey in the west suits a longer stay with beaches and sunsets, and the best walking is in between.

Do you need a car in La Gomera?

It helps. Buses connect the main villages, but a car lets you stop at viewpoints and reach trailheads in Garajonay. The roads are good but steep and winding, so allow more time than the distance suggests. You can also book an organised tour from Tenerife that includes the ferry.
