In short: hotels near the Guggenheim
The Artist Grand Hotel of Art, formerly the Gran Hotel Domine, faces the museum and is our first choice. Hotel Miró is the design hotel a couple of blocks away, with a spa. For a roof terrace at a lower price, Vincci Consulado is a five-minute walk from the entrance.

Our photographer stood at the window of a hotel room on Alameda Mazarredo with his camera on the museum. The morning light caught the titanium, and the building turned from grey to gold within a quarter of an hour. That is the reason to stay here. You see Frank Gehry's building before the queues arrive, and again when the facade glows at night.

The closest hotels to the museum
Two hotels sit so close that the museum becomes part of your stay. Both are on Alameda Mazarredo, the street that runs along the park above Abandoibarra.
The Artist Grand Hotel of Art
Many still know it as the Gran Hotel Domine, the name it carried before the change. It stands directly opposite the Guggenheim, with a roof terrace facing the museum and a spa offering massages and facials. The Gallery Modern Bistro serves Basque food from breakfast to dinner.
Best for: travellers who want the museum as a neighbour and luxury in every detail.
Good to know: Ask for a museum-facing room when you book, and check the room type before you pay.

Hotel Miró
The design hotel is named after the fashion designer Antonio Miró and sits a couple of minutes from the Guggenheim tram stop. Rooms are calm and bright, and the spa offers massage, aromatherapy and hydrotherapy. The gym is open around the clock.
Best for: couples and design lovers who want a spa and an easy walk to the Bellas Artes fine arts museum.
Good to know: From the upper floors on the street side you look across the park to the museum.

A little further, with terraces and pools
Five to ten minutes on foot buys you more for your money, and the museum is still within reach before breakfast.
Vincci Consulado de Bilbao
The hotel is five minutes from the Guggenheim, with a roof terrace and a restaurant serving local dishes. Moyua metro station is eight minutes away, so Gran Vía and the old town are quick to reach.
Best for: travellers who want a terrace and a high standard at a lower price than The Artist.
Good to know: The roof terrace is at its best on a dry summer evening. Bilbao sees rain all year.

Hotel Meliá Bilbao
The large hotel by the Euskalduna bridge is ten minutes from the museum along the river. It has an outdoor pool, a sauna and two restaurants, including Sumendi for local cooking.

Good to know: The Euskalduna concert hall is next door, which is handy for concerts and conferences.

Inside the Guggenheim Museum
On the doorstep
Stay by the museum and the art starts before your first coffee. Jeff Koons' flower dog Puppy guards the city side of the building, and Louise Bourgeois' spider Maman stands by the river. On the water, Fujiko Nakaya's fog sculpture releases its mist at intervals.
From the museum, follow the riverside walk along the Nervión to Zubizuri, Santiago Calatrava's white footbridge, and on to the old town in about twenty minutes. Read the story of the building in our guide to the Guggenheim Museum.

Our pick by the Guggenheim
The Artist Grand Hotel of Art
Step out of The Artist in the morning and the Guggenheim is across the street. For years the hotel was the Gran Hotel Domine, and many still know it by that name. The roof terrace looks straight at the titanium, and after a day in the galleries the spa waits with massages and facials. The Gallery Modern Bistro serves Basque dishes, so dinner is only a lift ride away. If the museum is why you came, this is where to sleep.
