Alicante, city and beach in one
The Explanada de España promenade is laid with millions of tiles in a wave pattern, and under its palms older locals play cards as the sun drops over the harbour. Five minutes away is Postiguet, the city beach, and above it all stands Santa Bárbara castle on Mount Benacantil. Alicante is a working Spanish city first and a resort second.
It is the capital of its province and the main gateway to the Costa Blanca. For the rest of the country, see our Spain travel guide.
What to see
El Barrio
The old quarter: whitewashed houses, flowerpots on the walls and tapas bars that wake late. Paths climb from here to the castle.
Santa Bárbara Castle
The best view in town. A lift tunnels up through the mountain from the beach side.
The beaches
Postiguet in the centre, and long San Juan beach to the north, reached by tram.
Mercado Central
The covered market, at its best in the morning.
Costa Blanca day trips
Altea: a whitewashed hilltop village above the sea, full of studios and views.
Guadalest: a village on a crag above a turquoise reservoir.
Tabarca: a tiny island by boat from Alicante, with clear water for snorkelling.
Villajoyosa: brightly painted houses on the beach and a long chocolate-making tradition.
When to go
The sun shines most of the year and winters are mild, which is why so many northern Europeans winter here. Summer is hot and busy, while spring and autumn are best for day trips and hiking. Compare it with other options in winter sun in Europe.
