Kraków's Main Square is one of the largest medieval squares in Europe. At Christmas it fills with wooden stalls, a tall tree and the smell of grilled cheese and mulled wine. It is also one of the best-value Christmas market breaks you can take from the UK, with flights from many British airports.

What the market is like

Around a hundred wooden stalls stand between the Cloth Hall and St Mary's Basilica, selling glass baubles, wooden toys, amber, lace and woollen slippers. The food is Polish: oscypek, the smoked sheep's cheese from the Tatra mountains, grilled and served with cranberry sauce, pierogi, sausages from the grill and grzaniec, the local mulled wine.

Every hour a trumpeter plays the hejnał from the taller tower of St Mary's Basilica, and the melody breaks off mid-note. It is worth standing still for, even on a cold evening.

The Kraków nativity scenes

Kraków has its own Christmas tradition: szopki, colourful nativity scenes built as miniature versions of the city's churches and towers. Szopka-making is on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage. On the first Thursday of December the makers carry their work to the Main Square for the annual competition by the Adam Mickiewicz monument. The best are later shown at the Museum of Kraków in Krzysztofory Palace.

Getting there from the UK

There are direct flights to Kraków from many UK airports, including London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh and Leeds Bradford, and the flight takes about two hours and 20 minutes. The airport train reaches Kraków Główny, the main station, in about 20 minutes, and the Main Square is about ten minutes on foot from there.

If you have an extra day, the Wieliczka Salt Mine, with chapels carved in salt deep underground, is about half an hour from the centre.

What Picolo would choose

What Picolo would choose: The Bonerowski Palace to stay on the Main Square itself, Balthazar Design Hotel for the highest guest rating. For a pool and a view of Wawel Castle, choose Sheraton Grand Kraków.

Why: The Bonerowski Palace is on the corner of the square, a minute or two from the stalls. Balthazar is rated 9.8 by more than 900 guests. The Sheraton has an indoor pool and a rooftop terrace looking at the castle.

The trade-off: the Sheraton is about a quarter of an hour from the market, and the walk back is cold on a December night. The Bonerowski Palace is small, so book early for the Advent weekends.
