Hemsedal: skiing in the Scandinavian Alps and where to stay

Steep mountains, long runs and après-ski with a Norwegian soul. This is Hemsedal, the resort many call the Scandinavian Alps, and the hotels close to the slopes.

Hemsedal has long been the ski resort for Norwegians who want an Alpine feel without leaving the country. The mountains are high and steep, the runs are long, and when the lifts close, the après-ski bars fill with rosy cheeks and good stories from the day.

The links to the hotels are partner links. If you book through them, Picolo may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. You choose your own dates and room on the hotel page.

The Scandinavian Alps

Hemsedal is often called the Scandinavian Alps, thanks to its high mountains, steep descents and terrain that challenges even experienced skiers. At the same time there are wide runs and dedicated areas for children and beginners.

The slopes of Hemsedal Skisenter

Hemsedal Skisenter has runs for every level, from gentle nursery slopes to black descents and freeride terrain. Many places to stay are right on or close to the slopes.

Getting to Hemsedal

Hemsedal is a few hours’ drive from Oslo, with buses from Oslo during the season.

A day in Hemsedal

Mornings in Hemsedal are often crystal clear. The mountains stand white against the blue sky, and the first skiers are already heading up while the rest of the valley wakes. You can ski long, wide pistes in the morning and try steeper terrain after lunch, with views across the whole valley.

As the sun begins to set, people gather in the après-ski bars. There is music, laughter and the good kind of tiredness that comes after a long day on the slopes. Later there is dinner, perhaps in a cosy restaurant in the centre or at the hotel with the mountains as a backdrop.

When is the best time to visit Hemsedal?

The season in Hemsedal usually runs from November to May, and spring skiing is popular. January and February often bring cold days and good snow, while March and Easter offer long days and sunshine. Winter holidays and Easter are busy, so book early if you plan to travel then.

Skiing with children in Hemsedal

Hemsedal has dedicated children’s areas, ski schools and runs suited to beginners. Choose somewhere with ski-in/ski-out access to make the days easier, so the children can take breaks whenever they like. Many families return year after year.

Après-ski and evenings in Hemsedal

Hemsedal is known for its après-ski, and the atmosphere is lively in season. But there are also quieter options, with restaurants serving good Norwegian food and hotels with a spa. After a day on the slopes it is nice to be able to choose between partying and peace.

The mountains close at hand

Perhaps the best thing about Hemsedal is how close it is. You get high mountains and an Alpine feel without a long journey, leaving more of your holiday for the slopes. For many, that is exactly what makes Hemsedal one of the best ski resorts in Norway.

Tips before you book

Book accommodation early for the winter holidays and Easter. Choose somewhere ski-in/ski-out or close to the lifts, and check whether you can buy your lift pass together with your stay.
