Julebord in Bergen 2026: Christmas feasts on Bryggen, on a boat and in hotels

Bergen celebrates julebord, the Norwegian Christmas feast, in Hanseatic wooden houses, on a floating stage in the middle of the fjord and in hotels across the centre. These are the places we would choose, what is served and how to make a weekend of it.

Rain lashes Bryggen, but inside the wooden house it is warm. The air smells of pinnekjøtt and aquavit, and the tables are laid with white cloths and candles. Out on the fjord, a boat full of people in party clothes glides past, its music carrying all the way to the quay.

Julebord, the Christmas feast Norwegians hold with colleagues and friends, is Bergen's celebration before the celebration, and the season begins in early November. The city offers everything from traditional feasts in Hanseatic buildings to buffets on boats and big hotel dinners. The hard part is not finding a place, but getting the date you want.

Short answer: where should you have julebord in Bergen?

For tradition and history, choose one of the restaurants on Bryggen. For a party with dancing, the Christmas buffet on Sjøscenen in the middle of the fjord departs from Bradbenken every weekend from 6 November to 19 December 2026. Book early, ideally before October.

  • Best tradition: the restaurants in Bryggen's wooden houses

  • Best party: the Christmas boat on Sjøscenen

  • Best for big groups: the central hotels

  • Best weekend: a Friday in mid-November

  • Best add-on: the gingerbread town in December

Bryggen: feasts in the wooden houses

Several restaurants occupy the old Hanseatic buildings on Bryggen, with low ceilings, crooked floors and candlelight. Enhjørningen, To Kokker and Bryggeloftet & Stuene have long served Christmas food in season, and their tables are among the first to fill.

The rooms are small and many julebord bookings are for groups. If there are only two or four of you, a weeknight is easier.

A Christmas feast on a boat: Sjøscenen

Sjøscenen is a floating restaurant moored in the middle of the fjord. You board at Bradbenken quay, close to Bryggen, for a Christmas buffet of pinnekjøtt, pork ribs, mashed swede, red cabbage and dessert, with views back to the harbour. After dinner a live band plays and the dance floor stays open late.

Sailings run every weekend from 6 November to 19 December 2026. Vegetarian food must be ordered with your ticket.

Madam Felle and show feasts

Also on Bryggen is Madam Felle, a venue with a long music tradition, which hosts its own julebord with a show and live entertainment. Right if you want the stage to matter as much as the food.

Julebord in a hotel

Several central hotels host Christmas feasts for companies and groups of friends, often with a room included. It is the easiest option for larger groups: dinner, party and bed under one roof, and no queue at the taxi rank at two in the morning.

What is on the table?

In western Norway, pinnekjøtt is king of the julebord: salted, dried lamb ribs steamed over birch sticks and served with mashed swede. Pork ribs with crackling, medisterkaker (pork patties) and red cabbage are almost as common, and many places offer lutefisk for those who want the full tradition. Dessert is usually riskrem, rice cream with red berry sauce.

Aquavit and Christmas beer are part of it for many, but most places offer good alcohol-free options too.

Make a weekend of it

Bergen in December has more than Christmas feasts. Pepperkakebyen, often called one of the world's largest gingerbread towns, goes on display in the centre, and the Christmas market in the centre runs through much of December. On a clear day, ride the Fløibanen funicular up Mount Fløyen to see the city dressed for Christmas.

Good to know before you book

  • Book early: the most popular dates in November and December go in the autumn.

  • Fridays and Saturdays cost most: a Thursday often brings the same menu with more space.

  • Mention allergies and vegetarian needs: many places serve a set menu or buffet.

  • Book your hotel at the same time: julebord weekends fill central hotels.
