Monaco holidays: Monte Carlo, the palace and the Grand Prix
Under two square kilometres, but with a casino, a royal palace, a yacht harbour and the world's most famous Formula 1 race. Monaco is a day trip from Nice or a luxury weekend on its own.

Monaco at a glance
It is five to twelve and the guards outside the Prince's Palace on Le Rocher are preparing for the changing of the guard. Below you, Port Hercule is full of yachts, and across the harbour Monte Carlo climbs towards the mountains. Monaco is the world's second smallest country, and you can walk across it in an hour.
Monaco uses the euro and the border with France is open. For more ideas, see our Europe travel guide.
What to see

When to go
May and June: warm and green. The Monaco Grand Prix usually runs in late May or early June, when prices soar.
July and August: peak beach season.
September and October: still warm and quieter.
Good to know
Nice airport is around 30 minutes away by car or bus, and the coastal train stops in Monaco.
The town is steep. Use the public lifts and escalators.
The casino has a dress code and age limit, and you need ID.
Where to stay
Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo is on the World's 50 Best Hotels list and holds three Michelin Keys. The Hermitage and the Métropole are close to Place du Casino, and by the beach in Larvotto, Monte-Carlo Bay is a good choice for families. All four are in our Monaco hotel guide, along with five more. Many visitors stay in Nice and take the train. See our Nice guide and French Riviera guide.
