Why Elounda?
Mirabello Bay is sheltered, so the sea here is often calm when the wind blows elsewhere on the north coast. The resorts are spread along the shore, many with their own swimming spots and jetties. The village has a small harbour with tavernas and boats out to Spinalonga.
Agios Nikolaos is about fifteen minutes south of Elounda by car. There you find more restaurants, shops and a livelier harbour in the evening.

Frequently asked questions about hotels in Elounda
How far is Elounda from the airport?
Elounda is about an hour by car from Heraklion airport, depending on traffic. Many of the resorts can arrange a transfer if you ask when you book. With a hire car you also have easy access to Agios Nikolaos, Spinalonga and the beaches further east.
How do you get to Spinalonga from Elounda?
Boats leave from the harbour in Elounda and from Plaka, just north of the village. From Plaka the crossing is shortest, only a few minutes across the strait. In summer there are many departures, but go early in the day to avoid the largest groups. Bring water and shoes for rocky paths.
When is the best time to visit Elounda?
June and September are good months, with a warm sea and fewer guests than in July and August. Many of the resorts close in winter and reopen in April or May. If you want to combine swimming and excursions, May and October are also pleasant, with milder temperatures.
Is Elounda good for families?
Yes, several of the resorts have kids clubs, shallow pools and calm places to swim. Domes of Elounda and Daios Cove suit families well. The bay is sheltered, so the sea is often calmer than elsewhere on the north coast. If your children are small, check that the hotel has a beach and not only jetties.
