Our first choice: Check availability and prices at the Excelsior Hotel Ernst
Cologne is the easiest big German Christmas city to reach from Britain without flying. The main station sits right next to the cathedral, so you can step off the train and be among the stalls in a couple of minutes.
The four markets, and the order to walk them
Start at the cathedral market on Roncalliplatz, where red-roofed stalls stand under a canopy of lights in the shadow of the cathedral's twin spires. It opens Monday to Wednesday 11am to 9pm, Thursday and Friday 11am to 10pm, Saturday 10am to 10pm and Sunday 11am to 9pm.
From there it is about a ten-minute walk south through the Old Town to Heinzels Wintermärchen on Heumarkt and Alter Markt. The market is named after the Heinzelmännchen, the house elves of Cologne legend. This is the one with the ice rink and the longest season: it stays open until 10 January 2027.
Carry on west for about a quarter of an hour to the Markt der Engel on Neumarkt, the "angels' market", where the stalls sit beneath strings of star-shaped lights. Finish with a walk along the Rhine to the harbour market beside the Chocolate Museum, which opens first, on 13 November, and has the river on one side.
Walking the whole loop at a relaxed pace takes about an hour, without stops. Most people need an afternoon and an evening.
Getting there from the UK
The train is the simplest option. Take the Eurostar from London St Pancras to Brussels, then change for a high-speed train to Cologne. The whole journey takes about five hours, and you arrive at Köln Hauptbahnhof, a two-minute walk from the cathedral market.
Flying is quicker on paper. Cologne Bonn Airport has flights from the UK, and the train from the airport to the main station takes about 15 minutes.
If you have an extra day, Aachen's Christmas market around its cathedral is about 40 minutes away by train, and Düsseldorf is about 25 minutes.

Our recommendation
The Excelsior Hotel Ernst: next door to the cathedral market
The Excelsior Hotel Ernst is on the square beside Cologne Cathedral. The busiest of the city's Christmas markets is outside the front door and the main station is a couple of minutes away. It is the obvious choice if you come by train and want to walk everywhere.
What Picolo would choose
What Picolo would choose: the Excelsior Hotel Ernst to be next to the cathedral market, the Cologne Marriott for a large modern hotel a short walk away. For something more unusual near Neumarkt, choose the Wasserturm.
Why: the Excelsior has the highest guest rating of the three and the best location for anyone arriving by train.
The trade-off: the Excelsior is the most expensive of the three, and in December the cathedral square is crowded in the evenings. The Marriott is a quieter base, ten minutes' walk away.
Frequently asked questions
When are the Cologne Christmas Markets in 2026?
The harbour market opens first, on 13 November 2026, and runs to 3 January 2027. The cathedral market and the angels' market on Neumarkt run from 16 November to 23 December. Heinzels Wintermärchen in the Old Town opens on 23 November and has the longest season, until 10 January 2027. Check the official sites before you book, as dates can change.
Which is the best Christmas market in Cologne?
The cathedral market on Roncalliplatz is the most famous and the most atmospheric, with the cathedral lit up above the stalls. Heinzels Wintermärchen in the Old Town is better for families, with an ice rink and stalls spread over two squares. Most visitors walk between all four in an afternoon and evening.
How do you get to Cologne from London?
Take the Eurostar from London St Pancras to Brussels and change for a high-speed train to Cologne. The journey takes about five hours in total and ends at Köln Hauptbahnhof, which is next to the cathedral. You can also fly to Cologne Bonn Airport, which is about 15 minutes by train from the main station.
How many days do you need for the Cologne Christmas Markets?
One full day and an evening is enough to walk all four markets. Two nights gives you time for the cathedral itself, the Chocolate Museum and a day trip to Aachen or Düsseldorf. Both have Christmas markets of their own and are less than an hour away by train.
When should you book a hotel for the Cologne Christmas Markets?
Book as soon as you have your dates. Weekends in late November and December fill up first, especially hotels within walking distance of the cathedral. Midweek stays are usually easier to find and cheaper. Choose a rate with free cancellation if your plans are not fixed yet.
