Where to stay in Dubai: the best areas explained

Dubai stretches along more than 50 kilometres of coast, and the area you choose decides whether you stay by the beach, beneath the towers or in the old city. These are the areas we would pick between, with one hotel in each.

From a hotel room in Dubai Marina you watch the towers reflected in the water, and the beach at JBR is five minutes away. The Burj Khalifa, though, is half an hour by taxi, and the old souks by the Creek further still. Dubai is not a city you walk around, and where you stay decides how much time you spend in cars.

The city runs along the coast from Old Dubai in the north to the Marina and Palm Jumeirah in the south. The metro follows the main artery, Sheikh Zayed Road, but most visitors take taxis. We have chosen the areas we would stay in and explain who each suits. For more hotels, see our guide to hotels in Dubai.

Short answer: where should you stay in Dubai?

For a short city break, Downtown is best, with the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall on your doorstep. For beach and nightlife together, choose Dubai Marina or JBR. Palm Jumeirah and Jumeirah Beach suit a pure beach holiday, and Old Dubai suits culture and markets.

  • Best for a first visit: Downtown
