Abu Dhabi holidays: the Grand Mosque, the Louvre and island beaches

A white mosque glowing in the desert light, the Louvre beneath a steel dome and beaches on islands just off the city. Abu Dhabi is calmer and greener than Dubai, and that is the point.

Abu Dhabi, the quieter capital

Arrive at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque an hour before sunset. The marble turns from white to gold to blue, and the reflecting pools mirror the domes. It is one of the most remarkable buildings in the Middle East, and entry is free.

Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates and the largest of its seven emirates, around 90 minutes by road from Dubai. Many visitors combine the two. For the wider picture, see our UAE travel guide.

What to see

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Open to visitors outside prayer times. Cover arms and legs, and women should cover their hair.

Louvre Abu Dhabi

The art museum on Saadiyat Island, beneath a dome that filters light like sun through palm leaves.

Long white beaches and a growing cultural district. The calmest part of the city to stay.

Yas Island

Ferrari World and Warner Bros. World, a water park and the Formula 1 circuit.

The Corniche

The city-centre seafront, with public beaches and skyline views.

When to go

November to March is best, with warm days and pleasant evenings. From May to September the heat is intense and life moves indoors. Compare with other options in where is hot in February.

Good to know

  • Respect local customs: cover shoulders and knees away from the beach and hotel, and be discreet with alcohol.

  • During Ramadan opening hours change, and eating or drinking in public during daylight is not allowed.

  • Taxis are cheap and easy. Public transport is limited.
