Northern lights weekend from the UK: three nights, three routes

You can fly from the UK to Finnish Lapland on a Thursday evening and be back on Monday, with three nights under a dark sky in between. The trick is to choose a route with a direct flight and a hotel where you can watch for the aurora without going anywhere. Here are three that work, and how to plan each one.

In short: a northern lights weekend

  • How long: three nights is the minimum. One cloudy night should not ruin the trip.

  • Where: Finnish Lapland, because it has the most direct flights from the UK in winter 2026/27, and dark skies within half an hour of each airport.

  • Which hotel: one with a glass roof or a dark setting, so you can watch from your room on every clear night.

  • When: from about September to March. February and March often bring clearer weather.

Our first choice: Rovaniemi with a night or more at Apukka Resort, as it has the widest choice of UK airports. Check availability and prices at Apukka Resort

Why three nights, and why Lapland

The northern lights depend on two things you cannot control: solar activity and cloud. Finnish Lapland lies under the band where the aurora appears most often. Even a quiet night can bring a display, but cloud can close the sky for a night or two. With three nights you get several chances. A single night in Lapland, or a weekend waiting at home in the UK, is a gamble. Lapland also has short transfers: each of the three airports below is within about half an hour of the hotels we recommend.

Route 1: Rovaniemi, the easiest

  • Flights: Finavia lists direct flights to Rovaniemi in winter 2026/27 from eleven UK airports, including Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Manchester and Newcastle. About three and a half hours.

  • Stay: Apukka Resort, glass-roofed cabins by a frozen lake about 15 minutes from town (rated 9.2), or Santa Claus Holiday Village for families (rated 9.4).

  • The plan: arrive and settle under the glass on night one. Spend day two on a husky or reindeer trip and go out on an evening northern lights tour. Use day three for Santa Claus Village or a snowmobile safari, and keep the last night for the sky.

Route 2: Levi, skiing and dark skies

  • Flights: direct to Kittilä from London Gatwick, Luton, Liverpool and Manchester in winter 2026/27. About three and a half hours, then about 15 minutes to Levi.

  • Stay: Northern Lights Village Levi, cabins with a heated glass roof in the forest about 15 minutes from Levi (rated 9.6).

  • The plan: ski or take a husky safari by day, eat in Levi village in the evening, and spend each night under the glass, far from the resort lights.

Route 3: Saariselkä, the darkest

  • Flights: direct to Ivalo from London Gatwick in winter 2026/27, then about 20 to 30 minutes to Saariselkä.

  • Stay: Star Arctic Hotel, glass-roofed Aurora Cabins on top of Kaunispää fell (rated 9.4).

  • The plan: snowshoe or ski into Urho Kekkonen National Park by day, use the sauna and hot tub at dusk, and watch the sky from the fell at night. It is the quietest of the three routes, and the best if you live near Gatwick.

What about Tromsø and Iceland?

Both work for a longer trip. Tromsø had direct flights from London and several regional airports in winter 2025/26, but not every 2026/27 route was published when we checked. Reykjavík has direct flights from several UK airports all year, but the city lights mean you need a tour to see the aurora well. For a three-night weekend with the aurora from your room, Finnish Lapland is the more reliable choice. See northern lights holidays 2026/27 for longer trips.

Our recommendation

Apukka Resort: three nights under glass

For most UK travellers, Apukka Resort is the simplest base for a northern lights weekend. Rovaniemi has direct flights from eleven UK airports, the transfer is short, and the glass-roofed cabins stand by a frozen lake, far enough from town for a dark sky.

Our verdict

What Picolo would choose: Rovaniemi for most travellers, because of the choice of UK airports, with three nights at Apukka Resort. Levi if you want to ski, and Saariselkä if you live near Gatwick and want the darkest and quietest trip.

Why: direct flights, short transfers and glass-roofed hotels mean you lose little time travelling and can watch for the aurora every night without a tour.

The trade-off: a weekend leaves no margin if the weather turns. If you can, add a fourth night, and choose a rate with free cancellation.

Frequently asked questions

Is a weekend long enough to see the northern lights?

It can be, if you go for at least three nights to a place under the auroral oval and stay somewhere dark. Cloud is the main risk, and three nights give you several chances. One or two nights is a gamble. Finnish Lapland suits a weekend best, with direct flights from the UK and short transfers.

Where is the best place for a northern lights weekend from the UK?

For most travellers, Rovaniemi, which has direct flights from eleven UK airports in winter 2026/27. Levi suits skiers flying from Gatwick, Luton, Liverpool or Manchester, and Saariselkä suits travellers near Gatwick who want the darkest sky. Each has a glass-roofed hotel within about half an hour of the airport.

How much time do you lose travelling?

Less than you might think. Direct flights to Rovaniemi, Kittilä and Ivalo take about three and a half hours or a little more. The hotels we recommend are within about half an hour of each airport. Leave on a Thursday or Friday, and you can have three full nights in Lapland and be home on Sunday or Monday.

When is the best time for a northern lights weekend?

From about September to March. February and March often give clearer weather, more snow and enough daylight for activities, which suits the February half term. December is popular for Christmas, with very short days, so book early. Late September and October are milder and quieter.
