Via ferrata in Norway: iron paths in Loen, Romsdalen and Odda
Steel cables, rungs in the rock and a suspension bridge over the void with the fjord far below. The best via ferrata routes in Norway, what to expect and the hotels nearby.
You are clipped to a steel cable, with metal rungs drilled straight into the rock under your feet. The fjord lies a thousand metres below you, still and green. Your heart is pounding, but you keep climbing, rung by rung, until you stand on a suspension bridge with nothing beneath you but air.
Via ferrata means iron road in Italian, and it is a way of climbing that anyone can try, with no climbing experience. Norway has opened several routes with some of Europe’s most spectacular views. Here are the best, and the hotels nearby.

How via ferrata works
On a via ferrata you are always clipped to a steel cable with two carabiners. The route has rungs, handholds and bridges, so you need no climbing technique, but you must handle heights and be fit. Most people go with a guide, who provides the gear and keeps you safe.
Gear: harness, helmet and via ferrata set come from the guide. Bring good shoes and gloves.
Season: from May or June to September, depending on the snow.
Age and fitness: many routes take children from around 12. You should be able to walk in steep terrain for several hours.
