Things to do in Prague

Prague is one of the few big cities in Europe that escaped the worst destruction of the wars, which is why you can walk through almost a thousand years of architecture in one afternoon.

Prague: the city break people return to

Prague has been a favourite city break for years, and it is easy to see why. The flight is short, the city is compact enough to walk everywhere, and the historic centre is so well preserved it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Vltava river divides the city. On the east bank are the Old Town, with Old Town Square and the Astronomical Clock, and the New Town with Wenceslas Square. Across Charles Bridge lie Malá Strana and the castle on the hill. The currency is the Czech koruna, not the euro.

Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic. If you like the great cities of central Europe, see also Budapest.

The best things to do in Prague

  • Charles Bridge: cross early in the morning, before the crowds, and see the statues in the morning light.

  • Prague Castle: one of the largest castle complexes in the world, with St Vitus Cathedral and Golden Lane.

  • Old Town Square and the Astronomical Clock: watch the figures appear on the hour, then wander into the lanes.

  • Josefov: the Jewish Quarter, with synagogues and the old cemetery.

  • Petřín: the hill above Malá Strana, with gardens and views over the city's spires.

  • The beer halls: the Czech lands are the home of pilsner, and beer culture is part of the city.

In December, Prague is one of the most popular cities for Christmas markets. Read our guide to Christmas market breaks.
