Experiences

This is where the international hit Barbie was shot

Although most of the Barbie movie was filmed in a studio, you can visit a few locations where scenes featuring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling were shot. For that, you have to head to Los Angeles. Here's our breakdown.

The fantasy comedy Barbie is on everyone's lips these days. Famous toy doll Barbie is played by Margot Robbie, and her partner Ken is played by Ryan Gosling. In addition to sales of the iconic toy receiving a huge boost, and pink fever hitting clothing shops, it has also become popular to visit some of the locations where the film was shot.

Set-jetting is becoming increasingly popular, and we have written before about beautiful Sicily where HBO Max series White Lotus was filmed, hotels in New York where Succession was shot, and, not least, the beaches in Greece featured in  the Mamma Mia films that you can visit in real life.

Barbie at Warner Bros. Studios

Although Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, is an American production, most of the film was actually shot in the UK, at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden. The town is part of the Watford district and is best known for its large film studio, which has housed the set, props and production facilities of the Harry Potter films. This has also become the major studio tour  attraction, The Making of Harry Potter.

However, you can also add the following destinations to your list if you're travelling to the city: Cheslyn House and Gardens and Cassiobury Park, learning about local history at the Watford Museum, and shopping.

Venice Beach

Barbie in Los Angeles

The pink and plastic Barbie Land, which naturally doesn't exist in real life (yet ...), is inspired by the cityscape of Los Angeles, especially the business and residential area of Century City and world famous Venice Beach

The scene where Margot and Ryan are rollerblading in bright pink and neon colours was shot at Venice Beach. The area is known for its long and vibrant beach promenade, where you can rent rollerblades, skateboards, and bicycles. It's also famous for Muscle Beach, a fitness area that has attracted bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts for decades.

The entire Barbie universe is generally inspired by Los Angeles.

The actors' top haunts during filming

Since much of the film was shot in a studio, it's easier for fans to seek out the places where the actors hung out during filming. The cast and crew stayed at Shutters on the Beach, which is a luxury beach hotel in Santa Monica.

Production designer Sarah Greenwood revealed to Condé Nast Traveler that Margot lives in Venice, and that they therefore frequented Gjusta Bakery almost daily during filming in the area.

"They have amazing food," says Sarah.

The place is known for its relaxed atmosphere and delicious coffee. There, you can find everything from breakfast and lunch to tasty baked items on the menu. Could this be where Ryan (Ken) enjoyed his morning coffee?

The actors stayed at this luxurious hotel for periods during the filming of Barbie.

Another spot where the Barbie team dines is the restaurant Chez Jay, an iconic steakhouse popular with both locals and celebrities alike.

"We also went to Musso & Frank Grill, which is a classic Hollywood place. It's not in Venice, but they serve the best martinis in Los Angeles. Charlie Chaplin used to go there," Sarah told CNT.

In conclusion, if you want to take a real Barbie selfie, Venice Beach is the best spot.
