The Red Sea

Sunset over the Red Sea.

The water below is so clear you can see the fish from the terrace. The villa is round and gleaming, almost like a spaceship that has landed on stilts in the sea, and when the sun goes down everything turns gold.

Shebara Resort is on an island in the Red Sea off Saudi Arabia’s west coast, with villas built over the water and along the beach. It is one of the most unusual places we have seen in the Middle East.

Picolo’s verdict

Why we like Shebara

The villas look like nothing else, and many stand on stilts above the water with their own pool. There are 73 of them, so it never feels crowded.

The resort has three restaurants, a spa and two outdoor pools, and breakfast is included. Bring a snorkel, the reef is right below you.

The villas have large curved windows, bedrooms looking straight out to sea and terraces with private pools. In the evening they glow like lanterns along the boardwalks.

The spa offers massages, facials and body scrubs. The resort has a kids’ club, a gym, two bars and three restaurants, so you never need to leave the island.
