2. Derby Hotels – The Caesar in Bayswater

For many, the cost of accommodation near the city centre can make a big dent in their travel budget. In that case, it's nice to have some options. Bayswater is ab area that's located roughly midway between Leicester Square and Notting Hill, on the north side of Hyde Park, and is an excellent alternative.

In addition to numerous bars and restaurants, Bayswater has a number of affordable hotels. One of them is Derby Hotels and its Caesar Hotel. The hotel is close to Paddington train station, where the airport train to Heathrow departs, but also a short walk to the aforementioned Notting Hill and shopping in Oxford Street.

A rule of thumb in London is never to stay far from an underground station, and Queensway is about a 5-minute walk from this 4-star hotel.

3. Savoy Hotel London – known from Notting Hill

Those who love film and TV will quickly discover that the city is one big backdrop. No matter where you are in London, you will be able to recognise and find locations from beloved films and TV series.

One of these locations is the venerable Savoy Hotel, situated right on the Thames. The luxury hotel has appeared in a number of well-known films, perhaps most notably Notting Hill (1997) starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant.

The Savoy offers luxury of the traditional variety and was actually the first hotel in the British capital to offer electric lights, elevators and bathrooms in all rooms when it first opened in the late 1800s.

For over 100 years, it has been one of London's most luxurious hotels, and it is therefore perhaps not surprising that this is also the place where celebrities often check in when they are in the capital.

From royalty to rock stars, the list of famous guests is too long to include here.

The hotel is also widely known for housing one of star chef Gordon Ramsay's most famous restaurants, The Savoy Grill.

5. Dukes London – pure luxury

Established in 1908, Dukes London is a luxury hotel with 90 rooms and suites. Stay in the heart of St. James's Mayfair – one of London's most famous areas for the rich and famous, and within easy reach of exclusive shops, restaurants and bars.

The hotel offers high-level service, and Dukes' concierges manage to help arrange reservations, theatre tickets, and whatever else their guests should require.

Located just five minutes from Buckingham Palace, it's perhaps no wonder that its rumour the hotel's facilities were frequented by both Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth in their day.

Apparently, they both had a fixed table reserved in case they stopped by for afternoon tea. Legend also has it that there is a tunnel between the castle and the hotel, but this has at the time of writing been neither confirmed nor denied.

Fortunately, you don't have to be a guest at the hotel to experience afternoon tea in the Dukes London's venerable drawing room. Reservations are recommended.

In addition to afternoon tea, the hotel is widely known for its hotel bar, Dukes bar. The bar was a regular haunt of James Bond creator Ian Fleming, and it said that it was here that he was inspired to write the immortal line "shaken, not stirred". So, it's perhaps not surprising that the bar's signature drink is Vesper Martini.

6. The Standard – featuring a Michelin-starred chef

In the summer of 2019, American hotel chain The Standard opened its first hotel in Europe. The Standard chain has become known for its fashionable and distinct rooms, and its hotel in King's Cross in London is no exception.

The 266 rooms come in all shapes and colours, from smaller pod rooms to suites with private balconies and outdoor bathtubs. In addition, the hotel has several bars, nightclubs and a restaurant on the 10th floor, run by Michelin-starred chef Peter Sanchez-Iglesias. Salsa nights, stand-up, and author events are hosted here.

The hotel's distinctive style, with bars and a DJ booth in the reception, makes it the perfect spot for those who want to be "where the action is". Its location near King's Cross train station has for many years been exclusively a hub for locals, and an area for inexpensive and simple hotels for tourists. In recent years, the area has undergone a transformation, and you can now find a number of hip restaurants, bars, and clubs here.

Three minutes away from The Standard, you will find St. Pancras station, from which can take the Eurostar train directly to Paris.

7. The Hoxton – choose from four different hotels

Hip, cool and trendy are three words that best describe the British hotel chain The Hoxton. There are currently four locations around London - each with its own character - but with good quality at a not entirely off-putting price (at least not based on London standards) as the common denominator.

The Hoxton Shoreditch was first in line, opening in 2006. Known as the big city's 'hipster' neighbourhood, Shoreditch offers a range of unique bars, restaurants, and shopping. If you stay in this area, you don't have to travel into the city centre to have fun. The hotel also has two restaurants.

If you check into The Hoxton Holborn, you'll be a short walk from the West End, Covent Garden, and Oxford Street. The Holborn has 220 rooms in all shapes and sizes.

In the west of London, you'll find The Hoxton Shepherd's Bush. The area was for many years best known for its TV and film studios but is today best known for its massive shopping centre (where you'll find all the same chain stores that crowded Oxford Street offers). But don't be fooled. You'll find plenty of exciting restaurants, including several with a star(or stars) in the Michelin Guide

8. St. Martins Lane – designed by Phillippe Starck

On the edge of Covent Garden, close to Leicester Square, you'll find the five-star St. Martins Lane hotel. Designer Philippe Starck has run wild and created a futuristic-style hotel. Large, airy, and bright rooms are not everyday fare in London's hotel world, but that is exactly what St. Martins Lane offers.

The hotel also offers breakfast, gym, and spa. The hotel also has a number of routes in the area designed to suit a morning run (or jog).

The location is also superb. St. Martins Lane is just a short walk to Covent Garden, museums, theatre, restaurants, and shopping. But you don't have to go far to discover the perfect way to start your evening to explore London. The the speakeasy bar The Blind Spot is located inside the hotel. In addition to fantastic drinks, it hosts live music, mainly jazz, several times a week.
