Riomaggiore
Riomaggiore is the southernmost of the five villages and the closest to the train station in La Spezia.
The Cinque Terre, meaning 'five lands', is a stretch of rugged coastline in Liguria, in north-west Italy. Here, five villages tumble down to the sea between steep terraces of vines and olive trees, and the whole area is protected as a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Corniglia
Just outside Corniglia is one of the few points where you can see all five villages along the coast.
The largest of the Cinque Terre towns and the only one with a long sandy beach. Monterosso is known for its lemons and anchovies, and it is the easiest base if you want a beach holiday.
A tiny fishing village wrapped around a harbour, often called the most picturesque of the five. Look up at the Belforte tower, built to protect the village from pirates.
The quietest village sits high on a headland rather than by the sea. Climb the long staircase from the station or take the shuttle bus, then enjoy the views along the coast.
Surrounded by vineyards, Manarola is the place to taste Sciacchetrà, a rare sweet wine made from grapes grown on the steep terraces. It is also a favourite spot for sunset photos.

Colour everywhere
Each village has colourful houses, narrow lanes, small beaches, cosy shops and good places to eat.
Many visitors come to the Cinque Terre to walk. The coastal paths between the villages range from easy strolls to steep climbs, and higher trails wind through vineyards and woods with views over the whole coastline.
Some routes have been closed for long periods after floods and landslides, and some paths require a park card, so check what is open with the Cinque Terre National Park before you set off. Wear proper shoes, carry water and avoid the midday heat in summer.
Cars are kept out of the village centres and the roads in are narrow and winding, so the train is by far the easiest way to get around. Local trains run along the coast between La Spezia and Levanto and stop at all five villages, with frequent departures in the main season.
From Pisa or Florence, take a train to La Spezia and change there. From Genoa, regional trains run down the coast. Pisa, Genoa and Florence are the nearest airports, with Milan further away.
The Ligurian coast
High season runs through June, July and August. Come in spring or autumn for cooler hiking weather and fewer people.
Each village has small guesthouses, rooms and apartments, but they book up early for summer. Monterosso has the widest choice, while Vernazza and Manarola offer more village atmosphere.
For more choice and often lower prices, stay in La Spezia, Levanto or Portovenere and take the train or boat in each day.
The best time to visit the Cinque Terre is spring and autumn, from April to June and in September and October. The weather is ideal for hiking, and the narrow lanes and trains are far less crowded than in July and August.
Summer is hot and very busy, especially in the middle of the day when tour groups arrive. In winter many restaurants and guesthouses close, but the villages are peaceful and the light is beautiful.
The easiest way is by train. From Pisa, regional trains reach La Spezia in roughly an hour, and from Florence the journey usually takes two to three hours, often with a change in Pisa. At La Spezia, switch to the local Cinque Terre train, which stops in all five villages.
Two or three days is ideal. That gives you time to visit all five villages by train, hike at least one coastal or vineyard path and enjoy an evening after the day-trippers have gone. A day trip is possible from Florence or Genoa, but it will feel rushed.
Monterosso is the best choice for beaches and the widest range of hotels, while Vernazza and Manarola offer more village charm. For more choice and lower prices, stay in La Spezia or Levanto and take the train in. Book well ahead for summer, as accommodation in the villages is limited.
You can, but it is not recommended. The roads are narrow and steep, parking is very limited and the village centres are closed to most traffic. If you arrive by car, leave it in La Spezia or Levanto, or in the small car parks above the villages, and use the train.
Stay in one of the five villages for the atmosphere: Monterosso is best for beaches and flatter streets, while Vernazza and Manarola give you the classic views. La Spezia and Levanto are practical bases with more hotels and frequent trains into the villages. The villages have few rooms, so book early for summer. Read travelling from village to village.
