Cancún is located in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. What exactly is it about this place that makes it America's vacation spot "numero uno"?

Here are four reasons why Cancún is a very popular destination:

1. Flights to Cancún

Over 38 U.S. cities have nonstop flights to Cancún. The flight time is also short, with only 4 hours from New York and Los Angeles, and 3.5 hours from Chicago.

There are also direct flights to Cancun from several major European cities.

Direct flights

There are around 40 nonstop routes between cities in the US and Cancun.

It takes just 30 minutes from Cancún Airport (CUN) into the city centre, and you can get to your hotel in three ways. Either you choose a minibus that you can share with others, you can take public transport, which is efficient, or you can take a taxi from just outside the arrivals hall.

If you want flexibility, you should hire a car. It is perfectly safe to drive around Cancún, and you can pick up your car at the airport.

The most important thing to do in Cancún is to swim in the sea or enjoy the sun on the beach, of course. Playa Delfines is one of the most beautiful. There are no hotels in view here and you can rest your eyes on turquoise water and a white beach. This beach is also a favourite with the locals.

Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is definitely worth a visit for a fun island experience.

Isla Mujeres is well worth a day trip. The small island is only a half-hour ferry ride from Cancún. Only one mile long, the island is known for its crystal clear waters and tranquillity and for being completely car-free.
You can, however, hire a golf cart and whizz around the island in no time.

Feel free to go here on a day trip and swim at Playa Norte or have dinner at one of the restaurants on the promenade, Avenida Hidalgo.

Cenotes experience

Crystal clear water and colorful fish.

If you go to the Yucatán Peninsula you must experience snorkelling in a cenote. In simple terms, a cenote is a sinkhole filled with fresh water. The oldest cenotes are out in the open, while the most recent ones remain underground. This is an activity that is both incredibly beautiful and exciting. Check with your hotel for a guided day trip to a cenote.
